Description

Nov.. 13, 1923. 1,473,654@
H. SUVN ER UMBRELLA IDENTIFIER Filed DeC. 19. 1922 l /O 1N VEA/TOR I n BY @Summer A TTORNEY i Palmari Nev. ia, reas.
To all whom t may concern: f
Be it known that l, HENRY SUMNER, citizen Y'of theA United States, and resident of New Bedford, in the' county ofBristol and State of lvll'assachusetts, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Umbrellaldentiliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to umbrella accessories, particularly to identifiers, and the main object is to provide a type of device which is mounted on and forms part of the handle, the specific purpose being to provide a compartment for an identification card.
Another object is to provide a hollow member in which a sliding door is provided, which when opened discloses an identilication card upon which the name and address of the owner are printed so that it may be returned.
rlhese and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named .Y parts in the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevational view of the main body of the device.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the card retainer sleeve.
Figure 4; is a sectional view taken on line 4 4: of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a front elevational view of the rotatable door sleeve. j
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6 6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a sectional elevational View of the various members assembled.
Figure 8 is a front elevational view of the device with the outer do-or sleeve rotated to open position.
Describing the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 represents the umbrella handle on the main stem 11. The main body 12 of the device is preferably mounted on the stem at the junction of the handle by passing a pin 13 thru the stem and the wall of the upper collar portion 14.
A radial depression 15 partly encircles the periphery of the body and is receptive of the identification card 16 which has such information as the name and address of the owner written or printed thereon.
Aretainer sleeve 17 is formed in longitunnnronn, :urnssncrrusnr'rs y .DENTIFIEL 1e, 192e. serial no. 607,762.
dinal sections which are preferably brazed together after being'fitted over the main body 12 and secured in place by having the pin 13 pass thru the'holes 18.
A relatively large opening 19 formed in theretainer sleeve tits over the depression 15 and provides a retaining shoulder around the entire edge of the depression to prevent the identification card from being removed. The identication card is slipped into place in the depression 15 by passing it thru a longitudinal slot 2O which lies adjacent to the openings 19. An annular detent 21 is provided adjacent the slot 2O and is designed to position the sleeve 17 in place by registering in a hollow 22 formed on the body 12.
A. third member 23, termed a door sleeve is construct-ed in half sections and are brazed after being slipped over the card retainer sleeve. rEhe sleeve is freely revoluble upon the card retainer sleeve 17 and an enlarged rectangular opening 24 encircles part of its periphery. One edge of the opening has an ear 25 extending therefrom, which is depressed and resilient, and engages and registers in the detent 21 when the outer sleeve is rotated into position. lVhen the ear registers in the said detent 21, both the slot 20 and the opening 19 of the card retainer sleeve 17 are entirely7 concealed from view.
The device is designed so that it may be attached to all types of umbrellas either during the process lof manufacture or after purchase by an individual. The handle of an umbrella is generally readily removable, and the identifier can easily be mounted in place by drillingthe umbrella stem and passing a pin thru both the main body and the card retainer sleeve, and the stem.
lf the umbrella is misplaced in a public place, the person finding it may readily identify the owner by exposing the card to view. This type of device is obviously more convenient to use than the metal edged tags which have been heretofore used, and possesses besides, a distinct ornamental appearance.
I claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a tubular body having a peripherial depression formed thereon, an identification card housed in said depression, a retainer sleeve fixed exterior of the body having an opening therein of smaller dimensions than the depression, said retainer sleeve having a slot adjacent to the side of the opening and adapted to communicate with the-depression and means for concealing the card.'
fixed exterior of the Ina-in body having an opening and slot therein, the latter lying adjacent to the opening and communicating With the depression, an identification card adapted to be passed thru said slot and housed in theV depression, and a revoluble sleeve on said retainer sleeve adapted to cover or uncover said card.
3. A device of the class described coinprising a tubular body having a peripherial de? pression, a retainer sleeve tted over the body having an opening and slot therein, the latter communicating with the depression, an identification card housed in said depression a-nd inserted therein thru said slot, a detentori said retainer sleeve7 a. cover sleeve revoluble on said retainer sleeve having an opening therein, a iexible ear Von the revoluble sleeve adapted to register in the retainer sleeve detent and retain the outer sleeve in closed position, and means for uncovering said card for perusal thereof.
Signed atv New Bedford in thercounty of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, this 13th day of November A. D. 1922. Y
` HENRY SUMNER.
