3 N OR ATTORNEY WITNESS UNITED STAIES PATENT OFFIQE.
HARRY R. HODGE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SCREW-ACTION WRENCH.
Application filed August 7, 1929.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HARRY R. Honor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screw-Action /Vrenches, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to screw action wrenches, and one of the principal ob ects is to provide a wrench of this type w th an outer jaw which is permitted a l mited amount of swing or cant with relation to the other of the jaws.
Another object is to produce a device of this nature which shall be simple of construction, cheap to manufacture, and durable and eflicient in use.
Other objects will appear from the following description and claims.
My invention is embodied in a device which is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing consisting of one sheet, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved wrench.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2, Fig. l.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view on line 3-3, F ig. 1.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several views. i This invention contemplates the providing of a wrench of the type commonly used on pipes, rods and the like, sa d wrench to be provided with a swinging aw so as to effect a canting for obtaining a more secure hold on the article grasped. The teeth of the jaws are faced in opposite directions for aiding in bringing about this result.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l is a main member of the device and comprises a hollow handle portion 2, which is knurled as shown in Fig. 1. Member 1 also comprises a threaded portion 3 and a circular head 4 below which is an annular groove 5.
A nut member 6 is provided with a threaded aperture for co-action with the thread 3, and is slotted at 7 for the passage of the lower end of the shank 8 of a jaw member 9. Shank 8 is pivoted in slot 7 by pin 10.
A jaw member 11 is provided on its upper face with forwardly inclined teeth 12' and on its lower face with an aperture 13 having shoulders 14, into which aperture Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1921.
Serial No. 401321.
The operation of the device is as follows VVhen the wrench is to be used, the jaw 9 is canted rearward so as to provide a U- shaped or wedged opening into which the pipe or rod is introduced, the handle 2 being turned until both jaws are forced into intimate contact with the pipe or rod. Upon now forcing forward on handle 2, the position of the teeth 12 and 16 will prevent the jaws of the wrench from slipping around the surface of the pipe or rod, and in consequence the teeth will bite into the object obtaining a secure hold.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A wrench comprising a pair of jaw members one provided with a shank and the other with a slot, the shank of one of said members passing freely through the slot in the other of said members, and said slot being greater in length than the breadth of said shank.
2. A wrench comprising a handle memher having a screw-threaded portion and a circular headed portion formed iptegrally therewith, a jaw portion shrunk onto said headed portion to turn thereon, and a second jaw portion having its shank passed freely through the first said jaw portion, the first said jaw being provided with a slot which is greater in length than the width of the shank of the second said jaw portion.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a member comprising a handle, screw and head portions formed inmovabieztmnsversely of said slot, said jaw tegrally; a nut member mounted on said members being provided with oppositely screw portion; a jaw member mounted on facing teeth. as and for the purpose set 10 said head portion and provided with debt forth. o
5 in rear thereof; and a jaw member pivoted In testimony whereof I haveafiixed my to said nut member and extending through signature. said-slot in the first said jaw member and HARRY R. HODGE.
