Description

P. c. HARD.
Bed-Bottoms.
Patented Feb. 25.1873.
AM. PHOTG-UTHHGRAFH/C 00. MT (ossamvz Prmomq) PATENT OFFICE.
PULASKI O. HARD, OF WADSWORTH, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT m BED-BCTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,158, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PULAsKI O. HARD, of Wadsworth, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the mode or manner of attaching sin gle-cone coiled-wire springs to wooden slats or frame for a spring bed-bot-. tom 5 the springs being connected together at their upper and larger ends with metallic links; the slats or frame to which the springs are attached at their lower and smaller ends resting upon the bed-slats; and especially does this invention relate to the formation and ter minus of the lower end of the springs, the object being a soft yielding bed-bottom made of coiled springs attached to wooden slats, in
a novel, safe, and economical manner.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a bed bottom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the spring, showing the formation and its terminus at the lower and smaller end.
A A are wooden slats, braced by cross-slats B B, upon which the springs O are supported, and to which they are attached by means of the barbed dowels D inserted in the holes g.
The spiral springs 0, made from suitable wire, are provided with links L, connecting their upper ends and holding them in position, and terminating at their lower ends in a barbed dowel, D, being a continuation of the lower coil. The dowel is formed by wire turned horizontally toward the center of the coil, then turned directly down-the end returning and resting under the arm of the dowel-the outer sides of the dowel being barbed, the barbs extending upward. The springs O are attached to slats A by forcing the dowel D into the hole 9 the barbs on the outer sides of the dowel holding thesame securely in place.
I claim as my invention- 1. The barbed dowel or loop D, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the barbed dowel or loop D with the spring O, the slats A and B, and the link L, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
