AMn/m-umosMPH/'ccamMasson/E1s mangas) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA G. CAMERON, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALFHIS RIGHT TO M. CROSBY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,774, dated February 11, l *3.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, EzRA Gr. CAMERON, of Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new land useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms;
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specifica-tion.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spring bedbottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention vappertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a transverse vertical, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical, section of my bedbottom. Fig. 3 is a view showing the mode of connecting the springs to the webbing.
A represents a frame of suitable dimensions, upon each end piece of which is placed a series ot' conical spiral springs, B B, with the point or apex downward. The lower end of each spring is pointed and inserted in a hole made for that purpose in the end piece of the frame, as shown inV Fig. 1. The upper ends of the springs of each series are passed through or interwoven in a piece of webbing, G, as shown in Fig. 3, the ends of said webbing being securely fastened to the frame A. D D are the bed-slats, which are fastened in position-by the webbing C being nailed or otherwise secured to their under sides. I use two slats on every spring, except the two outside ones, thereby securing a more flexible bed-bottom with larger springs than could otherwise be used. The top of the bed-bottom is nearly smooth, the slats being very close together, thereby preventing the bedclothes from sinking through between the slats and making ridges in the bed.
The mode of fastening the springs, as above described, without any nails, screws, staples, or other fastening that would have a tendency to make a noisy bed-bottom, is of great importance, as it secures a perfectly noiseless bedbottom, at the same time that it is soft, elastic, and durable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-e- The combination ofthe slats I), springs B,
and webbing C, two sla-ts being supported upon each `spring and the upper ends of the springs interwoven with or passing through and through the webbing, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day. of
January, 1873.
EZRA G. GAMEROJ.
