Be it known that I, JoHN DUsZA, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, of the city of New York, in lthe State `of New York, h ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Trimming Linotype- Slugs, of which the following is a specification, reference vbeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a parthereof.
Various attachments for trimming the slugs for linotype and printing machines have Vbeen devised Vand while many may be said to operate on somewhat the same principle there still remains a Vfield for the improvement of such devices from both, the manufacturers and the users standpoint. The present invention has. for its object to l provide acuttingdevice of the character ,the type point referred to which is of simpler construction than heretofore, cheaper to manufacture and assemble and more accurate and durable in use. l

On the' fixed plate a is mounted a relatively stationary knife d with which cooperates a relatively adjustable knife e between which knives the metalpasses after being cast and is trimmed according to the size desired for to be used. Since ythe position of the knife e depends upon the position of the knife slide b, -it will ibe seen gthat suitable operating devices for ldetermining theposition of this knife slide inv accordance with the type point required must be employed. These devices should be of simple construction l from the manufacturers standpoint and so hardened' and linterrelated that theyl will be at once Y.durable and `very accurate tov give the precise trimming required for any particular adjustment. YIt is the primary lobject of this invention to improve these devices in the manner indicated. i i
In the frame c thereis jonrnaled a rotatable shaft g which .is providedwithba knurled head g and a circular dial g2 so graduated as to indicate for lany given positonof the dial the type point which may be obtained Toward the other end of this sha-ft g may be Iformed integral therewith a ring g3 which may be hardened and machined up very accurately for functioning in the manner `to be described. After tne shaft g is inserted in the frame `c, the knurled headV g may be secured vthereto by a setscrew g4, the proper positioning of the shaft bringing the hardened ring g3 in proximity with the reverse `face of :the frame c.
A carrier z' may then be placed .on lthe end of l dened and secured 1 the .carrier i in such .inannerasto extend radially therefrom and la fillet is formed forV 1 ZJ and in such relation to concentric-ally arranged about the axis of the shaft g. The inner ends of these gage plugs Z rest against the periphery of the hardened ring g3 which may be either cylindrical or polygonal in outline. Each of the plugs Z having once been set with its end abutting against the hardened surface of the ring g3 may be secured permanently in this position by means of a screw Z. The ex posed ends of the gage plugs Z are intended to be engaged by means Vof a hardened anvil m set on the inner face of the knife slide the series of gage plugs Z that for a given setting of the rotatable carrier z' the anvil may be moved into engagement with the exposed end of a gage plug by moving the knife slide Z). To insure accurate setting of the carrier z' to give the precise point desired according to the gage plug'Z which determines the setting of the knife e, there is provided a locking stud which the operator may pass through any one of a series of apertures g5 formed about the dial g2 and into a recess 08 formed in the'frame c. By removing the stud n the dial may be set in any position acccrding to the point desired and the stud then passed through the particular aperture g5 which is then in registry with the recess g thereby affording a positive locking of the carrier z' for that particular setting. By thus locking the carrier it is certain that the-'particular gage plug Z then alined with the anvil m will receive the anvil m in its intended-relation and fractional errors of setting, such as might occur with a spring retaining device for the carrier z', are eliminated.
In operation the knife slide b is released by backing out the stud ZJ and retracting the knife slide from the carrier z' by means of the bell crank f. The carrier i with its protruding gage plugs Z is then free to rotate. The locking stud n is withdrawn from the dial g and the carrier rotated until the dial indicates that that gage plug Z which will give the number of points of type desired is alined with the anvil m. The locking stud a is then replaced so as to maintain this alinement. The bell crank f is then operated to bring the anvil m against the exposed end of the alined gage plug Z whereupon the stud Z9" is screwed into the knife Slide until ther headb3 acting on the lever f locks the knife slide b against further movement. This setting gives the proper clearance between the knives Z and e for the type point desired.
Attention is invited particularly to the construction of the shaft g'with the hardened ring g3 integral therewith and to the relation of the carrier z' to the shaft and the ring. This construction is not only of importance from the manufacturers standpoint but permits the ring g3 to be hardened and receive the ends of the hardened gage j plugs Z without danger of any wear between the gage plugs Z' with relation to the shaft g and the carrier z' is to be particularly noted as constituting an improvement over known cutting devices.
Another feature of construction consists? of the improved back plate 0 disposed in such relation to the trimming knives d, e as to prevent the type from being thrown too far through the knives. This plate o is hingedly engaged with the lknife slide Z) through lugs 0 and is pressed forwardly against the lugs by means of a spring pressed plunger p carried in the knife slide Z) and backed up bya spiral spring p. The function and action of the plate o on the slugs will be understood from known devices of somewhat similar character but different construction. Y

In an attachment of a linotype machine for trimming slugs, a fixed knife, a movable knife, a series of gage plugs to permit the adjustment thereof, a rotatable carrier in which the plugs are mounted radially, a shaft on which the carrier is secured and a hardened ring formed integral with the shaft and disposed within the carrier to forni a seat for the inner ends of the plugs,

In an attachment of a linotype machine for trimming slugs, a fixed knife, a movable knife, a rotatable carrier, a series of gage plugs mounted radially in the carrier to determine the adjustment between the knives, a frame on which the carrier is mounted, a dial carried with the carrier to indicate the adjustment, said frame and dial being provided with apertures, and a plug lto enter said apertures when in registry to lock the carrier in position for thel desired adjustment. j Y

In an attachment of a linotype machine for trimming slugs, a fixed knife, a movable knife, a frame, a rotatable carrier7 a series of gage plu s mounted in the carrier, a knife slide to which the movable knife is secured, an anvil on the knife slide to engage the end of an alined plug, an elbow lever mounted on the vframe and engaging the knife slide operatively, and means to lock the knife slide in adjusted position. In an attachment of a linotype machine for trimming slugs,'a fixed knife, a movable knife, a frame, a rotatable carrier, aseries of gage plugs mounted in the carrier, a knife slide to which the movable knife is secured, an anvil on the knife slide to engage the end of an. alined plug, an elbow lever mounted on the frame and engaging the knife'slide operatively, and a locking stud threaded into the knife slide and engaging the end of the elbow lever whereby the slide may be clamped in adjusted position.
5. In an attachment of a linotype machine' 10 for trimming slugs, a fixed knife, a movable posed within the carrier for engagement by 15 the inner ends of the plugs.
