Description

, ALLYN n. eoorim, or mansnnnnrowiv, IOWA.
MUFFLER cur-our.
Application filed November 26, 1917.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLYN R. COOPER, a
' citizen of the United States of America, and
resident of Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Muffler Cut-0uts, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction for a muffler cutout for completely shutting off the flow of exhaust gases through the muflier at times.
A. further object of this invention is to provic e an improved construction for muffler cut-outs in which the exhaust gases are easily and readily deflected through the exhaust opening when the valve is opened, and are positively prevented from flowing through such opening when the valve is closed.
A further object of this invention is tov provide an improved means for mounting a cut-out device on the exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine without cutting said pipe into two pieces or removing a portion of its length.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved cut-out device which is susceptible of being positioned for operation by and through a slight movement of the operating mechanism..
A. further object of this invention is to simplify and facilitate the installation or attachment of the device in position for use.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating a portion of an exhaust pipe with my improved cut-out device attached thereto in position for practical use. Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same device. dotted lines indicating open position of the cutout valve. Figs. 4 and 5 are mating halves of a cross-sectional view on the line l-5 of F 1.
In the construction of the device as shown the numeral 10 designates an exhaust pipe which leads from an internal combustion engine to a muffler device (not shown). An elongated hole 11 is cut in the plpe 10 for the installation and attachment of my cutout device. The cut-out device is formed of Specification of Letters Patent.

twomating semi-cylindrical members 12, 13 adapted to be fitted upon and inclosea section of the pipe 10 and cover the hole 11 therein. The member 12 is formed with apertured ears 14 and the member 13. is formed with apertured cars 15 adapted to register with the cars 14-, and said members are adapted to be secured together by cap screws or bolts 16 passing through the ears 14 and threaded into the ears 15. An extension or bypass 17 is integrally formed on the cut-out member 13 and is so arranged as to be in communication with the aperture 11 of the exhaust pipe 10. The aperture 11 and bypass 17 each have an area greater than the area of the exhaust pipe 10. The extension 17 is formed at one end with a horizontal socket or recess 18 arranged transversely relative to the aXis of the pipe 10 and at the end of the aperture 11 farthest from the engine, said recess lying wholly at one side of the longitudinal plane of the seatnext described. The extension 17 also is formed with a peripheral ledge or seat 19 adjacent the pipe 10 and a valve plate 20 is mounted or seated on said ledge and when in such position closes the communication be tween the pipe 10 and extension or by-pass 1? through the aperture 11. The aperture 11 is of sufiicient size to permit the valve 20 to be swung into the pipe 11, in the position indicated by dotted lines in F ig. 3, to place the cut-out in operation. A shaft 21 is mounted in the recess 18 and extends into and through bearing bosses 22 formed on the cut-out member 13, the axis of said shaft being at one side of the plane of the valve plate 20. The valve plate 20 is bent near one end and extends within a slot in the shaft 21 and is secured thereto by one or more pins 23. A crank or lever 24 is formed on one projecting end portion of the shaft 21 to which any suitable operating means besecured for operating-the valve. A tension spring 25 is coiled on the opposite projecting end portion of the shaft 21 and has one end seated in a slot or notch 26 in said shaft and the other end hooked around the adjacent boss 22. It is the function of the spring 25 to hold and return the valve plate 20to closing position on the seat 19. j
In practical use the valve 20 is oscillated to open position by the means described, the
crank or lever 24L moving through an arc in the direction indicated by the arrow A in 1, the valve taking the position indi pipe 10 to the mufiier and causes such gases to be deflected and cto pass through the aperture 11 and bypass 1? to the atmoshere. .The course of eases throu h the v o 2::
is free and unre-- aperture 11 and by-pas strictedand of larger area thanthe pipe 10 and consequently there is no reaction toward the engine and no choking action upon thegases. When in such position the valve 20 substantially closes the pipe it) beyond the aperture 11 and little if any of the exhaust gases are permitted, to pass through the muffler. A very slight movement of the crank or lever 2a is suficient to cause the movement above described, and the passage of gases in thedirection of the arrow B in Fig. 3 tends to hold thevalve in the open position. Upon release of the operating mechanism the spring 25' acts to return the valve to its closing position or seat on'the ledge 19, whereupon the gases are permitted to' traverse the pipe 10 to the muffler andnone of such gases are permitted to escape through the aperture 11 and by-pass. it will be noted that no cutting of the pipe 10 nor removal of portions thereof is necessary to install thedevice, with the exception of the cutting of the aperture 11. The device is then very readily attached to the pipe by fitting the members 12, 13 there to in-such manner that the bypass 1T registerswith the aperture 11., and insertion of the 'bolts lfi. i r
i There is no obstruction on the inner surwith ail-exhaust pipe unobstructed on its interior and formed with a downwardly-opening vent, 'ofsemi-cylindrical members I adapted to be mounted in embracing rela-- tion on said pipe, means for securing said members together, whereby end portions of said members are clampedon said pipe on opposite sides of said vent, the body portlons of said members being spaced from and circumferentially of-said pipe and surrounding said vent, one of said members being formed with an integral hollow extension registering with said vent, said vent and'extension being relatively long, the discharge opening of said extension lying in a plane parallel with the central longitudinal line of saidpipe, a shaft journaled in said member and housed from contact with gases discharged through said extension, which shaft is formed with a slot, a valveplate bent laterally near one end and having' its shorter end portion extended within said slot and fixed to said shaft and having a seat on the extension and adapted, when seated, to close the mouth of said extension, and also adapted to be moved through said vent substantially to close saidp pe, an operating leverformed on said shaft outsid said member and extension, and a spring wound on and engaging said shaft outside said member and extension and tending to hold said valve-plate in closing relation to said extension.
2.:In a inuiiier cut-out, a substantially cylindrical valve casing adapted to b= mounted on a pipe having an opening therein, said'casing being formed with anopening registering with the opening in said pipe, and also'formed with a valve-seat surrounding said opening' and disposed parallel'with theaxis of said pipe, said casing also being formed with a recess parallel with one endof said seat, which recess is wholly at one side of the plane of said seat and disposed transversely of the casing, a shaft disposed transverselyof and journaled in said casing and extending through said-"recess, the axis of said shaft lying at one side; of the plane of said seat, a valve plate disposed within said casing and adapt ed to be moved between a position of rest on said seat and a position. obliquely of said casing and pipe, which valve plate is bent near one end, the shorter end portion of said valve plate extending within said recess and being fixed to said shaft, and means for oscillating said shaft to move said valve plate.
