OUT-OFF VALVE.
Application filed-March 24, 1923. Serial No. 627,380.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT G.CA BLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartlesville, in the county of Vashington and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut- Ofl Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cut ofl valves and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character adapted to be interposed in a gas line and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which automatically cuts off the flow of gas when the pressure drops below a predetermined degree.
It is also an obgect of the invention to provide a novel and lmproved device of this general character wherein the valve is i normally maintained in open position under the influence of the pressure of the gas and which moves into closed position upon reduction of such pressure and wherein means is provided to. prevent the valve from returning toopen position under the influence of the pressure of the gas. v
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my proved cut off valve whereby certain 1mportant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more I fully set forth.
The novel features of my inventionwill hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to deburner of a gas stove or the like and which is in communication with the cylinder C. The cylinder C is suitably coupled to a main pipe M.
The cylinder C is vertically disposed and has mounted therein for rectilinear move- -ment the valve V secured to the lower or inserted end portion of the stem or rod 1. The rod 1 has free sliding movement through the bonnet or cap 2 herein disclosed as in threaded engagement with the upper end portion of the cylinder C. The normal pressure of the gas flowing from the main line hf of the pipe P is suflicient to maintain the valve V in a raised or open position but when such pressure decreases the valve V moves downwardly under the influence of the weight WV so that when such decreasing pressure reaches the danger point the valve V will have moved into closed position or into such position to prevent the flow of the gas into the pipe P. The weight WV as herein disclosed is'freely mounted on the stem or rod 1 and is supported by a cross pin 3 disposed at desired points through the stem or rod 1.
Extending outwardly from the upper portion of the cylinder C is an arm having its outer end bifurcated and extending from above within the kerf 5 of said bifurcation is the lower end portion of an arm 6 com prised in the latch L. The intermediate portion of the latch L is inwardly offset as at 7 while the upper portion of the latch comprises a grooved arm 8 to snugly engage the stem or rod 1. The lower portion of the arm 8 at opposite sides thereof is cut away to provide the downwardly facing stop shoulders 9 which, when the latch L is in engagement with the rod or stem 1, overlies a cross pin 10 carried by the stem or rod 1 and disposed therethrough and whereby the 'rod or stem 1 is effectively locked against upwa-rdmovement.
The pivoted end portion of the arm 6 is provided with a slot 11 to provide a supplemental arm 12 and encircling the arm 12 and interposed between the face of said slot and the arm 5 is acoil spring 1 1. This spring 14 serves to constantly urge the latch L toward the stem or red 1.
The shoulders 9 hereinbefore referred to are so positioned that when the valve V has moved into closed position the same will overlie the pin 10 and thereby eliectively hold the valve V against upward or opening movement when the pressure oi. the gas increases.
Supported upon the cylinder C is a housing 1 ml) lit e top of Said housing or cap being provided with an opening 15 through which the rod or stem 1 is freely movable. This housing or cap H covers the weight V and the latch L. The walls of the housing or cap H at diametrically opposed points are provided. with longitudinally disposed slots l6 through which extend the extremities of the; pin l0 hereinbefore referred to whereby said housing or cap H serves as a guide for the rod or stem 1, holding said rod or stemlagainst turning and thereby maintaining the pin 10 at all times in a position for proper coaction with the latch L. Extending outwardly from theupper portion of the cylinder C are the pins 17 which also'eXten-d within the slots 16 whereby the housing or cap H is maintained against turningwith respect to the cylinder C,
The wall of the housing or cap H at a predetermined point thereon is provided with an opening" 18 through which extends a pin 19 or the'like operatively engaged with the latch L whereby the latch L may be readily swung into an inoperative or release position without the necessity of removing the housing or cap H The communication between the cylinder Cand the pipe P as herein disclosed is by means ofthe' relatively small openings 20 drilled through a wall of the cylinder C inwardly and downwardly on an angle of approximately 41-5", This arrangement is provided so that it will be assured no hindrance or obstruction will be offered to the valve V during its closing. movement.
From the foregoing description it is thoughtto be obvious that a cutoff valve constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly welladapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it maybe assembled and operated, and it will also be obviousfthat my invention is susceptible of somechange and modification without departing frointhe principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claim ed.
I claim 1, A mechanism of the class described comprising, in combination, a cylinder adapted for communication with asonrce of gas under pressure, a, pipe leading therefrom, a valve mounted within the cylinder, the pressure of the gas adapted to maintain the valve beyond the connection between the cylinder and the pipe to permit unobstructcd flow through the pipe, the stem on the valve extending cxtcriorly of the cylinder, a weighted member carried by said stem for moving the valve into closed position upon reduction of the gas pressure, a latch pivotally engaged with the cylinder, said latch being disposed toward the stem and in a direction lengthwise thereof, said latch being provided with an inwardly facing shoul der, an outstanding pin carried by the stem, the latch outwardly of the shoulder having contact with the pin when the valve is in open position, the shoulder of the latch engaging over the pin when the valve is in closed position to hold the valve against movement into open position, and means constantly urging the latch toward the stem and pin.

A mechanism of the class described comprising, in combination, a cylinder adapted for communication with a source of gas under pressure, a pi leading therefrom, a valve mounted within the cylinder. the pressure of the gas adapted to maintain the valve beyond the connection between the cylinder and the pipe to permit unobstructed flow through the pipe, the stem on the valve extending cxteriorly of the cylinder, a weighted member carried by Said stem for moving the valve into closed position upon reduction of the gas pressure, an outstanding arm carried by the end portion of the cylinder through which the stem cxtends, a latch pivotally engaged with said arm, said latch being disposed toward the stem and in a direction lengthwise thereof, said latch being provided with an inwardly facing shoulder, an outstanding pin carried by the stem, the latch outwardly of the shoulder having contact with the pin when the valve is in open position, the shoulder of the latch engaging over the pin when the valve is in closed position to hold the valve against movement into open )osition, and means constantly urging the latch toward the stem and pin.

A mechanism of the class described comprising, in combination, a cylinder adapted for communication with a source of gas under pressure, a pipe leading therefrom, a valve mounted within the cylinder, the pressure of the gas adapted to maintain the valve beyond the connection between the cylinder and the pipe to permit unobstructed flow through the pipe, the stem on the valve extending oxtcriorly of the cylinder, a weighted member carried by said stem for moving the valve into closed position upon reduction of the gas pressure. a latch pivotally engaged with the cylinder, said latch being disposed toward the stem and in. a direction lengthwise thereof, said latch being provided with an inwardly facing shoulder, an outstanding pin carried by the stem, the latch outwardly of the shoulder having contact With the pin when the valve is in open position, the shoulder of the latch enga ing over the pin When the valve is in olose l position to hold the valve against movement into open position, and means constantly urging the latch toward the stem and pin, the portion of the latch outwardly of the shoulder being grooved to snugly engage the stem outwardly of the pin.
