WALKING DOLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
Application filed March 16, 1920. Serial No. 366,211.
2' '0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, LOUIS V. AnoNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in alking Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to walking dolls, and comprises a toy of this character of simple construction, and of few parts, with resulting economy in cost of production.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved doll; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow, and Fig. 3 a vertical section taken on the irregular line 33 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals denote like parts in the several figures.
l is the body of the doll provided with usual head, arm and leg members 5, 6 and 7.
The lower end of the body portion 4 is cutaway at the sides as shown at 8, the forward edges of such cutaway portion being rounded, as shown at 9, the cutaway portions 8 leaving a downwardly extending portion 10.
The legs 7 of the doll are pivotally connected within the recesses formed by the cutaway portions 8, and are provided on their inner sides with cutaway portions 11 corresponding to the cutaway portions 8 of the body of the doll.
hilounted on the lower extending portion 10 of the body a is a roller bearing 12 over Wlll'fill is adapted to travel a flexible band 13 connected at its opposite ends 14 in any suitable manner as by screws 15 to the rear of the legs 7. The roller bearing 13 is pro vided with flanges 16, 17 to prevent vertical disolacem-ent of. the member 13.
In operation the body of the doll is grasped by the hand with one of its legs held in frictional engagement with a surface and the opposite leg caused to advance. As the advanced leg is retracted the band 13 travels about the roller 12 and exerts a forward pull on the other leg and advances the same, such operation being successively repeated, causing the legs 7 to alternately move forward, thus advancing the doll and simulating the human walk. The stepped or cutaway portions of the leg and body members limit the rear movement of the legs as will be seen.
The doll may be made of wood or metal, the body thereof be in wood with the arms and legs of metal as may be desired. I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of the construction herein shown, and I do not intend to limit myself thereto except as pointed out in the following claims, in which it is my intention to claim all the novelty inherent in the mvention as broadly as is permitted by the state of the art.
Having thus described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a doll, a'body portion, leg members having their upper ends pivotally connected to said body portion, a bearing on the lower end of said body portion, and a flexible member having its ends connected to the leg members and adapted to travel over said bearing in the movements of said lastnamed members.
2. In a doll, a body portion, leg members having their upper ends pivotally connected to said body portion, a bearing on the lower end of said body portion, a flexible member having its ends connected to the leg members and adapted to travel over said bearing in the movements of said last-named members, and means on said bearing to prevent the displacement of said flexible member therefrom. a
3. In a doll, a body portion having recesses adjacent its lower end, leg members having stepped upper ends and pivoted to said body member, said stepped portions being adapted to contact with the recesses in said body member in the rearward movement of said leg members whereby to limit such movement.
4. In a doll, a body member, leg members pivoted on said body member, a bearing on said body member, and a flexible member adapted to travel on said bearing and having its ends connected to the rear of said leg members, whereby as one of the pair of said leg members is retracted the said flexible member travels about the said hearing and. exerts a forward pull on the 0pposite leg member to advance the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS V. ARONSON.
Witnesses:
ALEXANDER HARRIS, L. D. ULRICH.
