TRANSMISSION-BAN D LIN ING.
'Appication filed August 2,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS L. LIBBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor Locks, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful'Improvements in Transmission- Band Linings, of which the following is a specification.
The obj ectof my present invention is the provision of a simple, easily applied and efiicient transmission band lining designed more particularly for use in conjunction with the bands and the drums of a Ford transmission, so that the compression of any one of the bands will be attended by the creation of adequate friction between the unitary lining and the drum complementary to said band, and this without the unitary lining affecting the other drum.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the novel transmission band lining and in the combination herein after described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a perspective of my novel transmission band lining, per se,
Figs. 2 and 3 are views showing the arrangement of my novel band relatively to the drums and plural bands of a Ford transmission.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings:
The transmission illustrated is of the well known Ford type, and it is therefore unnecessary to describe the same, except to say that it comprises a casing 1, the brake drum 2, the low speed drum 3, the reverse drum 4, and the bands 2, 3 and 4 complementary to the drums 2, 3 and 4, respectively, and designed to be operated in the ordinary well known manner.
My novel unitary band lining 5 is preferably, though not necessarily, formed of textile material, and it is peculiar in that it is of a width equal to the combined width of the plurality of drums 2, 3 and 4:. At one end the lining 5 is bifurcated, as indicated, by 6, to form the two tabs 7, in which are eyelets 8, preferably of brass. These eyelets 8 are designed for the reception of the shafts of the speed levers, and they serve to prevent I transmisslon band llning of a width equal to premature wear of the lining 5.
In order to apply my novel lining 5, it

of the bands 2?, 3 or 4* will enable the lining-5 to adequately hold against turning the drum of the contracted band, and this without affecting the other drums, notwithstanding the interposition of the single lining 5 between the several drums and their transmission bands.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a transmissionband lining of a width equal to the combined widths of the drums of a Ford transmission and equipped at one end to the combined widths of the drums of a tabs with eyelets for the reception of the speed lever shafts of the transmission; the
the combined widths of the drums of a Ford Ford transmission and bifurcated at one end l to provide spaced tabs and equipped in said transmission and equipped at one end with eral drums and bands and being fastened means for fastening it in working position; at one end. the said lining being adapted to be slipped 6. Automobile transmission mechanism into position between the perimeters of the involving a series of drums arranged side by 5 drums and their complementary bands. side, a strap around each drum, means for 15 5. The combination with the drums and individually constricting each strap around bands of a transmission, of a band lining its cooperating drum, and a single band bei of a width for interposition between the tween the drums and the straps;
several drums and the bands thereof; said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 10 lining being interposed between the sev- 1 LEWIS L. LIBBY.
