Description

C. R. SHANNON.
BAND BRAKE.

CHABLES R. SHANNON, 0F NARROWS, VIRGINIA; ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-FOURTH T0 MARTIN P. FARE/IE3], 0F PEARISBURG, VIRGINIA, AND ONE-FOURTH TO FRED ERICK D. KELLEY, OE NARROWS, VIRGINIA.
BAND-BEAU.
niainoia.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLEs R. SHANNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Narrows, in the county of Giles and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class ofbrakes comprising an annular metal band having on the inside a rubbing surface which frictionally engages the drum, pulley or other part around which the band extends, when said band is contracted.
The invention has for its object to provide a brake band of the kind stated with a novel and improved removable rubbing surface, and to this end the invention consists in a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an edge view of the brake band, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a face view of one end of the band, and Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sections on the lines 33 and 44, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes an annularimetal band having lugs 6 at its ends for connection of the means whereby the band is contracted to effect the braking action. The inside of the band has a fabric lining 7 which is removable so that it may be renewed when worn. In order to hold the lining in place on the band, the latter is slotted as indicated at 8, and the lining is provided with headed studs 9 which extend through said slot, the heads of the studs being on the outside of the slot. In order to prevent the band from spreading laterally it is bridged at intervals by cross strips 10 which are arched, as shown in Fig. 4:, so that the heads of the studs may pass under the same.
The slot 8 starts adjacent to one end of the band 5 and extends entirely around to the other end, through which latter end it opens. The lining 7 is applied endwise from the last mentioned end of the band in order that the studs 9 may be inserted into the slot, the lug 6 at this end of the band Specification otLetters Patent.

having a bottom recess 11 located over the slot to accommodate the heads of the studs. A locking device is provided to prevent the lining from slipping back out of the slot. This device is a lug or abutment 12 which is bolted or otherwise fastened, as indicated at 13, to the lining adjacent to that end of the latter which is at the open end of the slot 8, and passes through. said slot. In order to accommodate the lug 12, the lug 6 at this end of the band has a slot 14. This lug 6 has a shoulder 15 against which the lug 12 abuts. Thus it will be seen that the lining cannot slip in the direction of the open end of the slot. Slippage in the opposite direotion is also impossible as the other end of the slot is closed and said end is engaged by one of the studs 9. The lining can be readily slipped 0d the band by removing the locking means connected to the lugs 6.
I claim:
1. A band brake comprising a band having a slot opening through one end of the band, a lining on one side of the band, studs carried by the lining and extending through the slot of the band, an abutment fastened to that end of the band which is at the open end of the slot, and a shoulder on the band engageable by said abutment to prevent slippage of the band in the direction of said open end of the slot.
2. A band brake comprising a band having a slot opening through one end of the band, a lining on one side of the band, studs carried by the lining and extending through the slot of the band, and means for preventing slippage of the band in the direction of the open end of the slot.
A band brake comprising a band having a slot, a lining on one side of the band. studs carried by the lining and extending into the slot of the band, and means for holding the lining against slippage of the band.
4. A. band brake comprising a band having a slot opening through one end of the band, a lining on one side of the band, studs carried by the lining and extending through the slot of the band, an abutment fastened to that end of the band which is at the open end of the slot, a shoulder on the band engageable by said abutment to prevent slippage of the band in the direction of said In testimony'whereof I afi'lx my signature open end of the slot, and lugs on the ends in presence of two witnesses.
