. Patented Oct. 12,1920.
ApplicationfiledAugust 19, 1919. Serial No. 318,446.
To all whom it may concern: I v
Be it known that LCHAnLns II, TURNER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
Worcester, in the county of ore-ester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Car-Seat, of which the following is a specification This invention relates ton car seat-*of the reversible type particularly designed for street railroad use. It is the object of my invention to provide an improved and simplified construction by which the several parts of the seat may be securelymaintained in their correct operative relations. With one exception, the parts are adapted for sheet metal construction by simple press operations, thus securing marked economy in manufacture.
A preferred form of my invent-ion is shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of myimproved seat;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof, with the seat in a different position;
Fig. 3 is a detailed front elevation of a portion of the seat;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the seat in different position;
Fig. 5 is a partial longitudinalsection, taken along the line in F 1, and
Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of certain parts.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a seat comprising a back 10, a seat-portion 11, and a pedestal 12 which may be used to support one end of the seat. The back 10 is connected by a pair of links 18 and 14: to a casting15 forming the end casing of the seat.
The links 13 and 1 1 are preferably secured to rods or shafts 16 having their end bearings in the castings 15 (see Fig. The parts thus far described may be of the usual form and constitute no part of my invention.
At each end of the seat I provide av supporting member 17 (Figs. 3 and 4). These members are preferably formed of sheet metal and each end is of substantially U shaped cross section, the center portion be ing cut away as shown in Fig. 6. The lower flat portion of the member 17 rests upon the pedestal 12 or upon such other suitable supports as may be provided. hen the pedes- TENT OFFICE.
tal 12 is used,.-the parts 12 and 17 are preferably welded permanently together, although they may convenient manner.
The casting '15 is secured to the member 17 by vertically extendin 'bolts 18'(Fig. 3) and horizontally dispose bolts 19 (Fig. 1). As the back 10 is positionedby the links '13 and 14 mounted on the rods 16 which have their end bearings in the castings 15, the back is thus held in definite relation with the supporting member 17, and with'the pedestal 12.
A hinge bar 20, having its two ends upturnedas shown in :Fig. 4, is secured by bolts 21 to the upper parts of the supporting member 17. A channel or cross bar 22 is firmly secured by bolts 01' rivets 23 to the intermediate portion of the hinge bar 20 and firmly holds the members 17 in definite spaced relation.
A pivot plate 24 is secured to the under side of each end of the seat 11, and is provided with slots or openings 25, Fig. 2. The upturned ends of the hinged bar 20 extend into the openings 25 of the pivot bar 2 1, the seat 11 being recessed to provide clearance for the ends of the hinge bar.
The seat is thus supported upon the,
hinged bar 20 which in turn is supported by the member 17, resting upon the pedestal 12 or other supporting structure. The seat can be lifted directly upward for removal, or it can be swung upward from either edge as indicated in Fig. 2, the upturned ends of the bars 20 forming a pivot around which the seat turns until it rests against the back 10. I
From this description it will be seen that the parts are all of very simple construction, and that they firmly and rigidly support the seat structure.
Having thus described my invention, it will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the claims and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is 1. A car seat having, in combination, supporting members each formed with a substantially Ui-shaped vertical section at the ends and partially cut away in the center portion, a bar connecting said separated porbe secured in any other tions and supporting the seat portion, and a rigid connection between the bars at opposite ends of said seat.
2. A car seat having, in combination, a pair of supporting members of substantially U-shaped section, means to support said members in operative position, a seat portion supported on said members, and a channel bar extending longitudinally along said seat and secured to said members to hold said members in definite spaced relation.
3. A car seat having, in combination a pedestal, a supporting member of U-shaped section fixed to the upperend thereof, a hinge-bar connecting the separatedarpper portions of said member and having upturned ends, a seat-portion, and a pivot plate secured to the under side of said seatportion and having openings therein, adapted to receive the upturned ends of said hinge-bar, said seat portion being angularly movable about either end of said hinge bar as a center, and being capable also of direct upward removal.
a. A car seat having supporting members,
having an opening to receive one of the upturned ends of said bar, said seat being thereby mounted for free angular movement about either end of said bars as pivots and being also freely bodily removable up- Wardly.
5. A car seat having supporting members, hinge bars connected thereto and upturned at both ends, a seat-portion and pivot plates secured beneath said seat portion and each having an opening to receive one of the upturned ends of its bar, said seat-portion being recessed above each opening to provide clearance for said upturned end and each plate cooperating directly with its hinge bar to form a pivot about which said seat is angularly movable.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
CHARLES H. TURNER.
