CHECK BOOK.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.23, 1919.
MARCUS P. EXLINE, GdF DALLAS, TEXAS.
CHECK-Book.
Application filed August 23, 1919.
To all whom 2f may conce/ra.'
Be it known that I, MARCUS I). EXLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Check-Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stationery and more particularly to check books.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved check book of the type in which there is a pack or book of check blanks which are bound together usually along the left hand end. The binding fastens together the stubs of the check leaves and in the type of book under consideration the stack or pile of leaves is adapted to be suitably connected or permanently connected to a backing or cover. It is an important object of the present invention to improve the means for securing the stack of leaves to the backing or cover in such a manner as to secure a substantial fastening of the parts together and also to reduce the expense of manufacture of the complete book of leaves with the cover.
It is well known that stacks of check blanks have been bound together along one end and provided with a tongue which was capable of being inserted into a receiving portion on the back or the loose cover to which it is desired to connect the stack of leaves, but my present invention has for its purpose to so improve the manufacture of the stack of leaves and provide for the attachment of the leaves to the cover as to eliminate the requirement of such a tongue and also to overcome the provision of a receiving means on the cover of the book.
With the above and other objects in view as will be rendered manifest to those versed in the art the invention consists of the construction, the combination, and in details and arrangements of the parts as will be more particularly described hereinafter relative to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the complete book.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the back of the book.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920. serial No. 319,458.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the book through the fastening prongs and binding device.
In the illustrated form of the invention the book comprises a series of check leaves or blanks 2 scored along the line 3 at the edge of the stubs 4L. The stack of leaves is shown as laid upon the backing 5 which is of somewhat greater length than the length of the leaves so that when the leaves are folded transversely about midway of the length of the leaves an end flap 6 with a fastening 7 can be folded over the stub end of the leaves and the fastening interengaged with a button or other suitable device.
The present improvement resides especially in the means for securing the stack of leaves to the back or cover 5 and as here shown the end of the cover underneath of the stubs is fastened to a metallic binding plate l0 in a form of a channel grip extending along the edge of the leaves and cover, the binding strip having a series of prongs 1l passed through the backing or cover 5 and bent down to clench the same upon the inside of the channel or binding strip. The upper fle-.nge or section of this strtip clenehes down upon the top or face of the adjacent stubs and thereby securely and permanently fastens the stubs in position on the backing or cover 5.
From the above it will be seen that I have invented an extremely simple, practicable, and inexpensively manufactured form of fastening securing the stack of leaves or blanks to the backing 5 and at the same time provided a device which is free from unnecessary parts and is capable of being conveniently carried in the pocket and readily unfolded to a flat position to be written upon when so desired. In this way the pack of leaves is not only permanently secured to the backing or cover but an ornate and finished article is secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A pocket check book comprising a stack of blank check forms, each of the check forms having a stub at one end, a backing or covering for the leaves, said backing and leaves adapted to be folded together, and means for fastening the same in the folded position; and a binder extending along the transverse edge of the stubs and cover to secure the same together, said binder comprising a substantially chanv nel shaped piece of metal having fastening cover, and a metallic channel member Y `lformed With prongs on one edge, the cover Y being secured Within and in close engagement'With one side of the Channel member by the prongs7 said channel `being adapted lo to resiliently engage the ends of a group of checks. e
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARCUS P. EXLINE.
