Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application filed June 11, 1920. Serial No. 888,204.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. McCon- MACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Clasps, of which the followmg is a specification.
My invention relatesito belt clasps 'of Y the clamp type. In this type the pintle of the clamping member, which is supported by the buckle body, carries rigidly with itself a clamping bar and anattaching plate which are also rigid with each other and angularly disposed. Such a structure is not adapted to effectively clamp belts of varying thicknesses.
The essential objects of my invention are to provide in such belt clasps a clamping means which effectively engages the belt so as to prevent slipping under stress, or bending of the clasp parts, regardless of the thickness of the belt, and to attain this end in a simple, strong, and inexpensive structure. I
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are a part of this specification, .and in which are shown merely preferred forms of embodiment of my invention,
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are front, plan, and rear elevations, respectively of my improved clamp,
Fig. 4, a section of the same engaging a portion of a belt taken on line 44 of i 3 Figs 5 and 6 enlarged partial sections of the clasp taken on line 44 of Fig. 3 showing the clamping members in' disenga ed and engaged positions respectively, ig. 7 an enlarged rear elevation of the clamping plate, and
Fig. 8, a rear elevation of my device embodied in a clasp which has short guide in illustrated 12 is the ooncavo convex face plate, 13 the rearwardly directed lateral walls, and 14 the inturned wall flanges of a clasp body. J ournaled in sleeves 01' bearlngs 15 fast on the long flanges 14, or, if preferred, in ear like extensions 16 of the walls when the flanges 17 are short, as shown in Fig. 8, is a pintle 18.
A belt attaching plate 19 comprises a loop 20, and spaced In S 21 integral with or fast to the pintle. %he portion of the plate intermediate the lugs is provided with a bevel 22.
A clamping plate 24 comprises an oblong body portion 25 and a lateral extension or tongue portion 26 midway its length. The edge of the body portion at each side of the tongue is provided with a bevel 27. Intermediate its length the part 26 is provided with a transversely disposed enlargement or sleeve 28 provided with a bore 29. The extreme outer margin of the tongue constitutes a longitudinally disposed stop shoulder 30, and the pintle 18 passes loosely through the bore 29.
The attaching loop 20 is adapted for engagement with a flexible loop 32 on one end of a belt 33, whose opposite end portion 34 slidably passes between the face plate 13 and the clamping plate 24.
The operation of my device is as follows. The end 34 of the belt is initially passed between the clamping plate and the face plate of the clasp toward the left as viewed in Fig. 4. This is done while the wearers body is contracted. After the end has reached this position the wearer expands-his body and in so doing draws the end 34 in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 4. This drawing movement engages the inner face. of the belt with the edge of the clamping plate 24 and partially rotates the latter until the belt end is tightly .pinched between the clamping and the face plate of the clasp. By virtue of the beveled portions of the attaching plate and clamping plate a considerable degree of rotation is permitted the clamping plate independently of any action of the attaching plate, the limit of inward movement of the former being shown in broken lines in Fig. 6. Because of the described free independent movement of the two plates within liberal limits it is evident that belts of varying thicknesses may be effectively engaged by the clamping plate. The disengagement of the clamping plate is effected by tilting the attachmg plate 19 until it contacts with the shoulder of the clamping plate and continuing the tilting motion until the clamping plate 1s disengaged. An extreme position of the parts is shown in Fig. 5. After the de scribed disengagement the belt end 34 may be withdrawn.
I claim 1. In a' belt clasp of the type set forth, a front plate, lateral walls on the front plate, a pintle supported by the Walls, an attaching plate rigid with the pintle, and a clamping plate yieldin ly mounted on the pintle engageable with the attaching plate.
2. In a clasp of the type set forth, a front plate, lateral walls on the plate, a single pintle supported by the walls, an attaching plate engageable with one end of a belt and mounted on the pintle, and a vibratory clamping plate loose on the pintle movable in one direction solely by the other end of the belt, and movable in the other direction by the attaching plate.
3. In a clasp of the type set forth, a front plate, lateral walls on the plate, a pintle supported by the walls, an attaching plate comprising a loop provided with a bevel, and lugs on the loop adjacent the bevel fast to the pintle, and a clamping plate comprising, a body, and a tongue on the body loosely journaled on the pintle and engageable with the bevel.
4. In a clasp of the type set forth, a front plate, lateral walls on the plate, a pintle supported by the walls, an attaching plate comprising a loop and lugs on the loop fast to the pintle, and a clamping plate comprising a body provided with a bevel enga 'eable with the lugs, and a tongue on the body loosely mounted on the pintle in the path of the loop. 1
5. In a clasp of the type set forth, a front plate, lateral walls on the front plate, a pintle supported on the walls, an attaching plate comprising a loop provided with a bevel and lugs on the loop at each side of the bevel fast to the pintle, and a clamping plate comprising a body provided with a bevel engageable with the lugs, and a tongue on the body loosely mounted on the pintle and engageable with the bevel on the loop.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
' GEORGE E. McCURMACK.
