Description

A. BAKER. SASH LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 1, I920.
Patented Sept? 28, 1920.
. to the top rail of the being spaced to produce a ALVA BAKER, OF PLATTSBURG, NEW
YORK.
SASH-LOCK.
To all whom z't may concern:
eit known that I, ALVA BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plattsburg, in the county of Clinton, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the lnvention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to whici it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to builders hardware, and more especially to sash fasteners; and the object of the same is to produce an improved lock for holding the lower sash closed.
To this end the invention consists in 'a pivoted spring-actuated hook mounted on a plate adapted to be attached to the frame, and a keeper plate adapted to be attached sash, the parts being of a specific construction as hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure l is a vertical section showing this lock in place and the lower sash closed and locked thereby, and indicating in dotted lines the position of the device when swung aside so that the lower sash may be opened.
ig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of F i 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevation looking from the left in Fig. 1. 1 I
The window frame F has an inner head I and a parting strip or head P, these strips channel in which travels the side rail S of the lower sash, and T shows the top rail and G the glass thereof. The upper sash is not illustrated herewith.
In the frame F is cut an an opening 1 over which by screws 2 is secured a plate 3 having an upright slot 4 so disposed that its lower end shall stand about flush with the top of a keeper plate 5 which is counter sunk into the top rail T of the sash and held thereon by screws 6, this plate having an opening 7 beneath which the material of the rail T iscut away as at 8.
Below the slot 4 the plate 3 is provided with long and short ears l1 and 12 between which at 13 is pivoted a rightangular hook 14, its upright arm being continued above the slot into a stop 15 and continued and deflected below the pivot into a heel 16 which is connected with the long ear by a contractile spring 17. The horizontal arm 18 of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application filed May 1, 1920. Serial No. 378,144.
this hook projects through the slot 4 a downturned spur 19 adapted to drop through the opening '7 of the keeper plate 5, and the inner end of this arm is preferably forked and carries an anti-friction rollerzl') mounted therein on a horizontal pivot.
In Fig. l the sash is closed and locked. To unlock it the thumb is placed against the roller QO'and moved to the left so that and has the entirehook assumes the position shown I in dotted lines. -This moves the sp out of engagement with the opening in the keeper plate, and the sash is then raised by lifting it with the other hand. In move ment upward in the channel in the frame. its side rail S travels'across the roller 20 and holds the hook in the dotted position. In the closing movement of the sash, as the end of its rail T and the extremity of the keeper plate 5 pass downward across the roller 20, the hook is permitted to swing on its pivot to the position shown in full spur projects downward from the horizontal arm 18 of the hook, whereas the body of the hook is pivoted in its support at a point 13 considerably below the plane of such arm. Therefore in order to open the window again it is necessary to unlatch or manually, before liftcommend it to use is that it can be applied to a window already put up. To do so, the beads I and P and the sash are removed, the opening 1 is formed in the frame F and the cut away to permit the inupper and lower ends of the 3, and this plate and its hook and spring are then applied andfastened by the screws 2. Meanwhile the keeper plate 5 can be easily applied to the top rail T of the sash. The parts are then restored, and the device functions as above described.
hat is claimed is:
hook whose horizontal arm has a depending spur for engaging said opening, a roller turning the hook ward into engagement spur for engaging said pivotedin the inner end of this arm, the vertical arm of said hook depending from the outer end of its horizontal arm, a supporting element for attachment to frame, said depending arm being pivoted to such element at a point below the hori zontal arm, and yielding means normally on its pivot to throw its horizontal arm inward and its spur downwith the opening in the 'keepervplate.
2. In a sash lock, keeper plate adapted top vrail of thesash for attachment to the near one end thereof and having'an opening; of a'right-angular hfook whose horizontal arm has a depending opening, a roller of this arm, the
pivotedin the inner end vertical arm ofsaid hook depending from the outer end of its horizontal arm and de flected obliquely into a heel, a plate for attachment to the frame andhaving a slot for the passage of the horizontal arm and spaced ears through which the depending arm passes, a pivot pin through said ears and this arm, anda contractile spring connectspur downward, as
the combination with a ing the heel with one of the ears and tending to turn the hook on its pivot to throw its horizontal arm normally inward and its described.
3'. In a sash lock, the combination with a keeper plate adapted for attachment to the 'top'rail of the sash near one end thereof and having an opening; of a right-angular hook whose horizontal arm has a depending spur for engaging said opening and whose upright arm depends from the outer end of the horizontal arm and is deflected into a heel-and rises from saidouter end into a stop, a plate for attachment to the window frame and having a slotthrough which said arm projects and a pivotal support for its depending portion, ands ring means between thefplateandiheel for swinging the horizontal arm normally inward, as described. I
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, inthe presence of two witnesses.
