Description

WINDOW SASH LOCK. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 16, 1920.
1. 34;5 92 P t t d July 6, 1920.
WWE'QS UNITED STATES WINDOW-SAS'H LOCK.
Application filed January 16, 1920.
To all whom, may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER HoLnswou'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and the State 01 California, have invented a new and useful Window-Sash Lock, oi which the tollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window sash locks and the object of my improvement is, to afford facilities for preventing the opening of the sashes beyond a given distance.
l. attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the numerals refer to the several parts throughout the view.
The plate, 1, its upper and lower brackets, 2 and 3, to which is attached perpendicular front and back guide rods and 5, and provided with an aperture in upper and a pocket in lower bracket for the reception of tubes referred to hereinafter, constitute the traintwmrk of the window sash lock, which is secured by screws to the face of stile of upper sash.
The front guide rod l, being attached by a threaded end to bracket 2, and extending part way down toward bracket 3, the back guide rod 5, secured in the same manner to bracket 3, and extending upward into center of aperture provided in bracket 2, a slide bar 6, to which, into and through is attached the lower end of a tube 7, that is slidably mounted over back guide rod 5, and adapted to slide back and forth through aperture in bracket 2, during operation of slide bar (3, a tube 8, pointed at lower end and provided with a rim at upper end slidably mounted over front guide rod 4:, lower or pointed end adapted to pass though an opening provided in slide bar 6, and into the pocket in bracket 3, thereby holding slide bar 6, in an operating position overlapping top rail of lower sash.
Upon the opening of either of the sashes, slide bar 6, adapted to and carrying tube 8, by its top rim and sliding tube 7, through aperture in bracket 2, is moved by top rail Specification of Letters Patent.

of lower sash upward under and is stopped by bracket 2, preventing the further opening of the sashes, the slide bar (3, and tubes '7 and 8, droppin to their former positions upon the closing of the same.
lVhen the sashes are in a closed position, the tube 8, may be raised out or" the pocket in bracket 3 and through the opening in slide bar 6, allowing slide bar 6, attached to back tube 7, to be turned on guide rod 5, out of path of top rail of lower sash, allowing full movement 01 the sashes. V
l am aware that, prior to my invention, window sash locks ha been made to swing out and into path ot ascending sash and supported by bracket plates. l therefore do not claim such a combination broadly, but
I claim:
A window sash lock of the character described, in combination with a pair c vertical sliding sashes comprising a plate, adapted to be attached to the stile oi the upper sash, said plate having upper and lower ln'ackcts adapted to and carrying ba 1k and front guide rods, front and back tubes sli ably mounted on said guide rods, said upper bracket having an aperture and said lower bracket having a pocket for the reception of the said front and back tubes, the said tubes perating in conjunction with a projecting and retractable Slide bar which is attached to the lower end of salt back tube and pro vided with an opening for engagement with said front tube; said front tube being pointed at its lower end and pn led with a rim at its upper end, is slida ly mounted through an opening in said slide bar, lower pointed end being adapted to I into said p= 'ket in the lower of brackets, holding the said slide bar in a locked and operating position overlapping the top rail ot' the lower sash, whereby upon the movement of either of the sashes, said slide bar carrying the said trout tube by its top rim is forced upm'ard under and is stopper by said upper bracket, thereby limiting the relative movement of the sashes.
