UNITED STATES OFFICE.
JAN iaAn'rUzEL, or YOUNGSTOWN, 01110.
I NEWSPAPER-Bowen.
Be it known that I, J An BAirrUznL, a citizen of Poland, residing at Youngstown, county of Mahoning, and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Newspaper-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the provision of means for holding a paper when These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination-of parts hereinafter described and shown in the 'accompanying drawings, forming a'material part of this disclosure, and in which-.
Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing' a paper holder made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a partial side elevational view of the same.
Fig. 3 is avtransverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figs. 1 and 4, drawn to an neat and eifective device has been presentedenlarged scale, and
. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
Fixed upon the shank 10, at spaced intervals along its length, are a pair of clips 14 in which are hingedly engaged oppositely disposed bars 15, these bars being connected at each end by semi-circular curves 16, with spaced parallel bars 17. These elements form the frame for supporting the paper and constitute in effect a pair of flat oval wire frameswhichmay be folded closely together or disposed in a horizontal plane, as
indicated best in Fig. 1.
Secured to one of the bars 17 by other clips 18 is a rod 23 having an enlarged.
forked head 22 at its upper end, and pivoted upon a pin 21 between the forks 22, is a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
Application filed October r5, 1919. Serial No. 330,730.
1 head 20 formed on a rod 19 extending co incidently with the rod 23.
The lower end of the rod 23 is pivotally:
engaged by a pin 24, between the two parallel s1des 25, of a U shaped head 26, the'head containing in its outer surface a plurality of indentatlons 27, and slidably engaged to move longitudinally" upon the ,head 26 is a rectangular sleeve 28, provided with an enlar ed circular operating knob 29.
ormed in the head is an internal recess 30, in which is disposed a flat semi-elliptical spring 31, adapted to engage any of thesev eral recesses 27, so as to hold the sleeve in position relative-to the head 26.
In operation, the margin of the newspaper is placed between the rods 19 and 23, which are then closed tightly together, the head 26 is rotated on the pin 24, so that the lower ends of the rods 20 and 23 enter the space between the sides 25, whereupon the sleeve 28 is moved so as to engage over the ends of the rod and held in an adjusted position .by the spring 31, clamping the rods together with the paper between, thereby holding the paper ekpanded over the frame elements in an obvious manner. I
From the foregoing it will be seen that a which will effectively hold a newspaper or like sheet'suspended in position to be conveniently read by a person manipulating the handle 10, and that the edge of the paper may be clamped or released by maneuvering the sleeve-28 in a manner which will be clearly apparent.
I claim 1. A paper "holder comprising a stem, a
frames, a second rod pivoted with the first named rod, a head adapted to engage the two rods when in close relation, and a slide movable over said head whereby said rods are held in'said head.
2. A newspaper holder comprising a handle, a frame having distensible'elements arranged in parallel and adapted to extend oppositelyoutward from the handle, a rod secured to one of the lateral elements of said frame, a second rod pivoted with the first named rod, a body pivoted at the opposite end of the first named rod, said body having a recess receptive of the lower end of each of said rods, a slide movable on said hollow I body, and a-detent carried by said slide engageable in i'ecesses formed in said body, said slide being movable so as to confine said rods Within said body.
