June 10, 1930. K. HAYASHI LEA-F HOLDER FOR BOOKS Filed y 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 V Inventor fits fiajw/x/ A iiorney June 10, 1930 HAYASH] I 1,762,686
LEAF HOLDER FOR BOOKS Filed July 15, 1 29 2 shins-sheet 2 Inventor A itorney Patented June 19, 193i) TEN OFF 165E KEN HAYASHI, 0F EVANSBULRGH, ALBERTA, CANADA LEAF HOLDER FORBOOKS' Application filed July 15, 1929. SeriaIN'o; 378 -5311 This invention relates to an improved accessory especially designed for use in association with books and constructed to maintain the halves of the book open and to retain the leaves open to facilitate reading, copying and the like.
The invention is in the nature of an attachment which is connected to and carried by the book to render it portable and it is made to permit it to be applied to the book in a manner to take care of the increasing thickness and decreasing thickness of the halves as the pages are turned over from the beginning toward the end of the book.
In carrying the invention into effect, I have evolved and produced a simple and economical article which is susceptible of easy application and removal, which is not likely to tear the pages, which is out of the way, easy to manipulate, and otherwise efficient in fulfilling the requirements of an article of this class in a satisfactory manner.
The particular details and their specific association. and arrangement will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a book, showing it spread with the retaining device in operative position.
Figure 2 isatop plan view of the device itself as constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 3 is an end view observing the device in a position from left to right in Figure 1.
Figure 4: is a side view of the structure seen in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the parts of the device.
'The major part of the device is in the nature of a frame and is generally desig nated by the reference character 6. I have found it expedientto provide a frame of general ll-shaped configuration, the bight portion of which is adapted to be located on the exterior of the adjacent end of the book, and the arms 8 and 9 of which are adapted to be inserted between the leaves 10 and 11 of the book, as observed in Figure 3.
The extremities of: these: arms 8 and 9' are pointed to facilitate insertion. ()nthe centor-of the-bi-ght portion? is, an outwardly projecting finger grip 12 ofappro riate configuration,
The part 6 may bemade: from asmall tube; Atthepoints 13 and 14am upstrnok ears, these beinglocated adjacent the center. At the opposite-.ends-of the portion- 7? are similar; ears 15 and 16.: These ears constt tute spaced 1 pairs-of hearings in which rock shafts 18 and :19 are mounted for oscillation. In. thisv way, I provide a pair' of suitable clamp members 20 and 21, for cooperation with the" oppositehalves of the book. The inner: ends-are formed with latcrall zbent and appropriately shaped operating, elements or. handle/s22; and 23. Then, too, at this spointlprnvide retaining springs-24,01 appropriate construction. The opposite ends ofthe shafts 18 andfil9. are directed laterally and-in parallelism withthe arms 8 and 9. These-end portionsoverlie the-arms 8 and 9 andare of general arcuate configuration as indicated Lt-.25, and 26, respectively.
These. constitute the clamping fingers and it, will beobserved that theyv terminate in retaining balls 2.7;Which rest upon the pages in"; the position seen in, Figure 1.
These. clamp members 20 and 21 are so constructed. and. arranged as to permit the clamping; fingers25 and 26 to be swung back clear of the pages, so that the pages may be. turned over without interference. This avoids tearing of the pages. Particus larly; do; I wish to emphasize the fact that these? devices- 20and 21 are independently operable. Thus the leaves may be turned from either side of the book as desired, in accordance with the will of the user. Obviously, the handles 22 and 23 are arranged to cooperate with the finger grip 12 to facilitate the opening and closing of the respective clamping devices.
From the foregoing description and drawings it will be seen that I have evolved and produced an unusually simple and inexpensive contrivance which is susceptible of ready attachment and detachment, which is maintained on the book as long as desired and may be carried from place to place with the book. It holds the halves of the book open and maintains the pages or leaves fiat down to facilitate copying, reading, etc. The independent clamping devices are such as. to facilitate manipulation and turning of the pages. It is thought, however, that by reading the description, a clear understanding of the invention, its construction,
method of use and featuresand advantages will be had. Therefore a more lengthly description is believed to be unnecessary.
Minor changes in the shape, size andrearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed, may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
I claim:
1; As a new product of manufacture, a retainer of the class described comprising a substantially U-shaped member having its arm portions constructed for insertion be tween the leaves of an open book, a finger grip carried by the intermediate portion of the bight of said frame, a pair of individual clamping ,devices carried by said frame and having operating handles located for cooperation with said finger grip and also ineluding leaf engaging fingers disposed over bearings, pairs of individual leaf clamping said arms. 1
2. In a structure of the class described, a substantially U-shaped attaching frame provided with pairs of longitudinally spaced bearings, pairs of individual leaf clamping devices each includinga shaft mounted for oscillation in one pair of the bearings, each of said shafts being formedon its'inner end with an operating handle and on its outer end with a curvate' leaf engaging finger.
3. In a structure of the class described, a substantially U-shaped attaching frame provided with pairs of longitudinally spaced devices each including a shaft mounted for oscillation in one pair of the bearings, each of said shafts being formed onits inner end with an operating handle and on its outer end with a curvate leaf engaging finger, and a terminal ball on the extremity of the finger. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
KEN HAYASHI.
