' invention herein disclosed, may be made umrso STATES CHARLES a srelvronnjor rnnnronr, NEW YORK.
rcncanAlvr-can Tone-s.
To all'whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SIeMonD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Ice-Cream-Can Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to lifting tongs, and more particularly to tongs employed in lifting icecream can'sfrom the freezers, in which the same are supported.
The primary object of the invention is to provide tongs of this character having clamping jaws, adapted to clamp the upper portion of an ice cream containing can, to facilitate the easy removal of the same.
A further object of the invention is-fto provide adjustable means for clamping the can, to enable the tongs to be employed for use, with cans of various dimensions and s1zes.
. A still further object of the invention is "to provide means for locking the jaws in their adjusted positions, thereby preventing the same from releasing their hold, on the can under operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi-' nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood e. that" changes in the precise embodiment of the within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.-
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevationalview of tongs, constructed in accordance with the present invention, as applied to an ice cream can.
Fig. 2 illustrates a bottom plan view of the same.
Having reference to the drawing in detail, 7
the reference character 5 indicates the body of the tongs, which is provided with the internal screw threads 6, to receive the threaded shank 7 of the operating bar 7. j
The upper end of the operating bar 7 is provided with a transverse opening 8, which accommodates the hand lever 9 which as shown is substantially long and provided with the heads 10, formed on the respective ends thereof, which heads prevent displace- 1116111) of the handle 9, from the opening 8,
when the same is in operation.
Specification of Letters-Patent; Patented Aug. 31 1920-. Application filed ram 29, 1919. Serial no. 320,639.
.The lower end of the operating 7' is provided with a head 11, which is provided with acircular groove 12, the same being for the purpose of accommodating the-inner ends'13, oftheclamping jaws 14:, thereby permitting the head to revolvewith relation to the jaws 14. y 1 o These 'clamping'jaws 14, include substantiallyright. angle members, the inner ends shoulders 17, for engaging under the head 18, of the ice cream can 19, shown more parj r ticularly by Fig. 1 of the. drawing.
Radiating from the body 5, of the tongs, are the right'angled arms 20, each of which being provided with a depending forked f portion 21, which forked portion is adapted n to receive andaccommodate one of the clamping jaws 14, a bolt 22, passing through suitable registering openings, in the forked ends of the arms 20, provides means for pivotally connecting the clamping the arm 20.
From the foregoing it will be seen that if itbecomes necessary to removean ice creamv can from its freezer, it is only necessary to move the operating bar 7 to expand'the jaws, to the limit of their outward movements, whereupon the lower ends 16 thereof, are forced into the ice-which:usua1lysurrounds the ice cream can. The operating bar 7 is now operated to'contract thejaws, to a position to engage the head 18 of the can, whereupon thejaws are securelylocked to the can'andthe deviceis now inaposit1on to remove the. can, the same being acor pull directed to the body a person pulling on the bar 9. I Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is Y to V complished by a slight upward movement, of the tongs by i 1. Tongs including a bodyportion, right I angled arms extending from the bodyportion, each of said arms having a depending 7 1 10% portion, clamping jaws including right angled members, means for pivotally con-' necting the clamping jaws to. the right anj gled arms, means on one end of each ofthe clamping aws for cooperating with an ice cream can, an operating bar threaded to 7 move through the body, a head on one end of the operating bar, means for connecting the head and one end of each of the clamping jaws whereby movement of the'operating bar produces a relative movement ofthe clamping jaw.
2. Tongs including a body portion having a central threaded opening, arms formed integral with the body portion, clamping jaws pivotally connected to the arms, a threaded operating bar operating in the threaded opening in the body, means for providing a connection between the clamping jaws and operatingfbar whereby movement of the opcrating bar produces a relative movementof the clamping jaws.
3. Tongs including a body portion, a 20 threaded operating bar adj ustably supported within the body portion, a head formed on one end of the operating bar, said head having a, groove, clamping jaws associated with the body, each of said jawshavingan arm provided with a head on the extreme end thereof, said-heads ofthe clamping jaws being positioned in the groove, whereby movement of the operating bar produces a relative movementof the clamping jaws.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aihxed mys'ignature in the presence or" two witnesses.
