Description

0. L. HECKMANN. FILE HANDLE 0R HOLDER. APPLICATION HLED DEC. 18, 4918.
Patenwd June 3, 1919.
l/Lineman mumm OSCAR L. HECKMANN, or s'r. CHARLES, MISSOURI.
FILE HANDLE 0R HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une3, 1919.
Application filed December 18 1918. Serial No. 267,275.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR L. HEGK ANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of St. Charles, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful File Handle or Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved file handle or holder, and an object of the invention is to improve, simplify and render more practical a similar device set forth illustrated and claimed in the Patent 1,231,884, issued to O. L. Heckmann, July 3, 1917.
A further object of the invention is to provide a specially constructed handle having means at one end to receive one end of the filing tool, and its other end provided with vise jaws for clamping the other end of the file securely.
A further object of the invention is to afiord means for maintaining the jaws of the vise in their correlative positions, and means for drawing the jaws together and separating them, for clamping and releasing the file.
A further object of the invention is the provision of improved means carried by one end of an elongated screw for clamping the file in different positions.
In practical fields the details of construc-- tion may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved file handle or holder constructed in accordance with the invention. 7
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view showing the holder employed, whereby a file may be held flatwise.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates a handle or holder, which, in
side elevation, is substantially rectangular and arched, therefore it is provided with rear and forward downwardly extending arms 2 and 3. The lower end of the arm 3 is supplied with a notch or recess 3, adapt-' ed for the reception of the file blade 7, with one of itsedgesfacing upwardly. An elongated screw 10 is threaded at 9 through the arm 2, the opening 9 through the arm 2 extending in the direction longitudinally with the handle 1, whereby the screw 10 is in parallelism with the handle. One end of the screw 10 is provided with a hand piece '11, whereby the screw may be operated or rotated in one direction or the other. The forward end of the screw 10 has a reduced extension 17 the threads of which are of the same pitch as the threads of the body of the of the extension 17 The larger portion of the extension has an annular groove for the reception of the conical end of the shank of the set screw. It is obvious that the set screw may be adjusted in order to hold the head member swivelly connected to the extension, or it may be sufficiently tightened as to hold the head member firm and immovable. When it is desired to hold a file or other tool 7 as in Fig. 6, said file is placed as shown in contact with the arm 3. The screw 10 is then adjusted, the head member then engages the flat face of the tool 7, the screw 10 turning swivelly in the head memher. After the tool is firmly clamped whereby it is immovable, the set screw 19 may be tightened to prevent the head member from turning. The lower end .of the other arm 2 of the handle is enlarged and is rectangular in cross section, there being :an' opening v2Fformed therethrough at right angles to the opening 9. An improved vise 4 is pro vided, and it comprises the jaws 4 and 4 The adjacent faces of the jaws near their upper portions have L-shaped recesses 4, adapted to engage opposite faces of the encal) partly engaging into the larger portion large'ment of the arm 2.
One. of the walls of one of the L-shaped recesses, preferably of the jaw 4 which passes through the opening 2% and also through an opening 12 in the upper part of the jaw 4*. By this construction the jaws of the vise are held firm, and in correlative alinement; In fact the jaws are guided toward and from each other when adjusted. The jaw 49 screw stud 15, which passes loosely through the jaw l for the reception of the wing nut 14. Coiled about the screw stud 15. and interposed between the two jaws 4 and 1 is a coil spring 16. It is obvious that when the wing nut 14 is loosened up the jaws are rendered separable automatically through the medium of the expansive action of the coil springs. However, by tightening up on the wing nut the jaws may be drawn toward each other. Hence, it is apparent that the jaws are capable of such adjustment, that file blade shanks of different sizes may be clamped firmly. The lower portions of the adjacent faces of the jaws 4 and 4 are provided with two sets of recesses 5 and 8. respectively. The recesses 51 may be engaged by the opposite edges of the file blade, or if the file blade shank is large enough, they may engage it. Otherwise the recesses 8 are designed to receive and be engaged by the shank of the file blade or other tool.
As shown in Fig. 2 it is obvious that the smaller part 17 of the extension 17 may be threaded into a recess or bore 18 of the arm 3, when the head member is not employed to clamp a file blade against the forward arm 3.
The invention having been set forth what claimed as new and useful is 1. In a file handle or holder, the combination with a frame provided with forward and rear depending arms, the lower end of the forward arm having a notch to be engaged by the file blade, of a vise having separable jaws and being detachably connected to the lower end of the rear arm, the lower end of the rear arm having an enlargement rectangular in cross section, the upper end of the jaws of the vise having L-shaped recesses to engage said enlargement to hold the vise rigid with relation to the arms, the lower ends of said jaws having means for engaging the shank of the file blade to clamp the file firmly.
2. In a file handle or holder, the combination with a frame provided with forward and rear depending arms, the lower end of has a gage stud or pin 13, I
is provided with a.
the forward arm having a notch to be engaged by the file blade, of a vise having separable jaws and being detachably connected to the lower end of the rear arm, the lower end of the rear arm having an enlargement rectangular in cross section, the upper end of the jaws of the vise having L-shaped recesses to engage said enlargement to hold the vise rigid with relation to the arms, the lower ends of said jaws having means for engaging the shank of the file blade to clamp the file firmly, means for clamp ing the jaws together, and means between the jaws for separating the jaws when the clamping means is released.
3. In a tile handle or holder, the combination with a frame provided with forward and rear depending arms, the lower end of the rear arm having an enlargement rectangular in cross section, and provided with a transverse opening, of a vise comprising separable jaws, one of said jaws having a gage pin extending through said opening and through the opposite jaws for detachably connecting the vise to the enlargement, the other of said jaws having a threaded stud passing loosely through the former jaws, means threaded on said stud to draw the jaws toward each other, means on the stud and between the jaws'for separating the jaws when the former means is loosened, the lower adjacent faces of the jaws having file blade shank engaging means, and means carried by the forward arm for the reception of the file blade.
t. In a tool holder, the combination with a frame provided with forward and rear depending arms having means to engage and clamp a file blade, of a screw threaded through one arm, the forward end of said screw having an extension, provided with a non-threaded enlargement and a reduced threaded part, a head member having a bore corresponding in shape and receiving said extension, whereby a file blade may be clamped between one end of the head mem her and the forward arm, and means carried by the head member and engaging the en largement of the extension for holding the head member on the extension either swivellvor immovable.
In. testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OSCAR L. HEGKMANN. lVitnesses:
AUGUST Trronnrmn, VVALTER F. HECKMANN.
