CARL G. JANSON AND CHARLES J. BRAUN, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
BUNK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Iatented Aug. 1'7, 1920.
Application filed July 9, 1918. Serial No. 244,629.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CARL G. JANSON and CHARLES J. BRAUN, citizens of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bunks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved bed particularly useful on ships and in camps. The bed is simple, cheap and sanitary and will. fit into awkward spaces.
The invention is illustrated in theaecompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bed.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bed.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the bed.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the supporting means for the mattress supporting frame.
7 are respectively a side elevation, an end elevation and a plan of portions of a modified form of bed.
In the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate a head and foot post, on the bottom and top of which collars 8 are turnably mounted. said collars having flanges 4 which may be cured to the floor and ceiling to secure the posts in position to support the bed. Set screws 4 are provided in the collars -lto prevent turning of the posts.
Angle iron supports 5 and 6 are bolted midway between their ends one above the other to the inside of posts 1 and 2 by bolts 7 and 8, the flanges 9 of which supports extending inwardly from the posts and the ends of the flanges 10 of said supports being provided with notches 11. The supports 5 and 6 are maintained in horizontal position by angular stays 12 which are riveted at their corners to the posts 1 and 2 and at their ends to the flanges 10 of said supports. Lower and upper mattress frames 13 and I l are provided for sustaining the lower and upper mattresses of the bed. Said mattress frames includeend angle members 15, having inwardly extending flanges 16 secured to the ends of the side rods 17 of the frame, and downwardly extending flanges 18 which rest upon the flan es 9 of supports 5 and 6 respectively an have pins 19 extending therefrom which fit in the notches 11, whereby the mattress frames are suported properly on the bed posts 1 and 2. ilattress springs 20 are secured at their ends to the flanges 16 of the end frame members 15. Guards 21 are pivotally mounted on the outer side rods 17 of the mattress frames at the head of said frames and are normally held in upright position by hooks 2:2 pivoted to the posts 1 and 2 and eyes 23 on the keep ers which are engaged by the hooks. W henthe hooks are disengaged from the eyes, the guards swing down from the rods 17 and the mattress frames 13 and 14: may be lift ed off the supports 5 and 6. When the mattress frames are removed from the supports 5 and 6, the set screws 4 may be loosened and the posts turned into such a position that the supports 5 and 6 will be out of the way.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5. (3 and 7, one end of the guard 21 is pivoted at 25 to the outside of the head end frame member 15 and engages the end of the support 5 on the post 1 whereby the guard is maintained in upright position when the bed is assembled. hen the mattress frame is removed from the supports 5 the guard may swing down by gravity. The ends of the supports 5 are maintained rigidly in position by braces 26, secured at their respective ends to the bed posts below said supports and to brackets :27 which are scoured to the ends of said supports. Head rail 28 and foot rail. 29 are respectively secured at their ends to the inner side of the flanges 10 of the head and foot supports Said head and foot rails extend horizontally above the supports 5 and the ends of the mattress frame and downwardly at their ends which are secured to the supports. The ends of the flanges 10 of the supports 5 are bent inwardly to rest against the ends of the mattress frame and to provide a space between the ends of said mattress frame and the flanges ll! of supports 5 to receive the ends members, a guard hingedly connected to a side ol the mattress lramc a hook clcment loosely connected to one of said posts and cngageable with the guard to maintain it in upright position.
2. A bed of the lcind described comprising a single head-post and a single foot-post, transversely extending supporting members one secured to an intermediate portion 10 thereof to eachpost, a pair of brace arms secured to each post, the arms of each pair having connection respectively with the op 'positeends of the supporting member on the post, an intermediate portion of said supporting members between their extremities having a flange ii'm'ardl projecting from its lower edge portion, the extremities of said supporting member being oilset in *ardly and having notches in the upper edges of said oll'set portions, a mattress frame to extend between. said posts and to rest upon the flanges of said supporting members, and projections extending from the mattress frame and adapted to engage in the notches of the supporting members to maintain the frame against accidental displacement.
3. A bed of the kind described comprising a single head-post and a single foot-post, horizontal supporting members, one secured at an intermediate portion thereof to each post, a head;rail and a tootail rigidly mounted on said snp iorts, respectively, an inwardly projerting llange extending from each of said supporting members, a mattress Frame adapted to extend between said posts and to rest upon said flanges, a pair of brace arms secured to each post at a point distant .i'rcm said. supporting members, and outward 1y projecting extensions on the ends of the supporting membersrthe brace arms of each pair extending Within the plane of the post and having connection with said outward extensions of the supporting members on said posts.
4. A bed of the kind described comprising a single head-post and a single loot-post, transversely extending supporting members one secured at an intermediate portion thereof to each post, respectively, a pair 01' brace arms secured to each posh the arms oi each pair having connection respeetivcly with the opposite ends of a supporting member, and a mattress frame adapted to extend between said posts and to rest on said supporting members.
In testimony whereof We allix our signatures. CARL G. JANSON. A
CHARLES J. BRAUN.
