2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
UNITED STATES ALBERT TROTTER, OF LOUG'HTON, ENGLAND.
BED-TABLE COMBINED VI'ITH, GUPBOARDS 0R LIKE RECEPTACLES.
Application filed May 18, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT TROTTER, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Bel lair, Lippits Hill, High Beech, Loughton, in the county of Essex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Tables Combined with Cupboards or like Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combination piece of furniture especially designed for use in hospitals, sick rooms, or for invalids and aged people as well as for ordinary domestic use as a fireside companion.
The object of the invention is to provide a bed or other table, cupboard or cabinet, of neat and attractive appearance, and
in which the table portion can be folded, adjusted and easily turned away from the bed or armchair when not required. In addition to which the chest or cupboard part may serve as a receptacle for other articles.
The invention comprises a pedestal-like part alongside which a leaf or table can be folded on a hinge or supported as by a stay or knuckle-joint. The leaf may be on a pivot on a base block, or the whole pedestal may be turned by mounting it on a pivot frame with or without roller or ball bearings. The inner end of the leaf is attached to a board or cross-piece in the pedestal, and this with the leaf can be raised and lowered by a screw operated by simply turning the pedestal top, or in any other suitable manner.
The side of the pedestal opposite the leaf is in the form of a cupboard, or more than one, or a cupboard, a shelf and say a fall front portion, or drawer giving access to the interior. The pedestal is mounted on casters.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred construction is illustrated by Way of example.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a bedtable combined with cupboards, and
Fig. 2 1s a sectlon of a detall. Fig. 3 is a broken sectlonal vlew of the 7 table top and connections, showing particularly the mounting of the reading arm.
On the drawings a is the bottom of a combination piece of furniture or pedestal hav- Specification of Letters Patent.
- ing depending Patented Aug. 10, 1920. Serial No. 332,345.
brackets 6 provided with rollers c which run on a race in the base (Z which is mounted on casters 6.
A drawer or box f is pivotally mounted on the bottom a. This drawer may contain any suitable articles and could be used for coal. It will be seen that a pocket 9 of air is obtained between part of the framework 72, of the pedestal and the drawer 7 when the drawer is being closed. drawer returning with a and greatly reduces noise when the drawer is being closed. 6 is a stop for the drawer.
Above the drawer is a bookcase and above the bookcase is a cupboard or chest 70, suitable for medicine, the cupboard being adapted to be closed by a door Z pivotally mounted at m.
On the top 12 of the pedestal is a support 0 for the upper portion 7) provided with a rail 9 preferably of brass.
he upper portion 79 has a depending screw 1' in engagement with a sliding part .9 on which a bed or other table 25 is pivotally mounted at u. The table in the extended position, shown in Fig. 1 is supported by a strut o and has a socket for a reading arm 10 carrying a book-rest 00 adapted to be turned into any suitable angle.
A socket 3/ is also provided on the top a to receive a reading arm such as 10.
It will be understood that as the screw 0 is rotated the slide 8 and the table 6 will be moved upward or downward So that the table can be placed at various desired levels.
Fig. 2 illustrates a slightly modified construction in which the table If is pivotally mounted on a cross-pieces.
As above intimated the chest is could if desired be used as a smokers cabinet or other cupboard could be substituted for it.
WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An article of furniture, comprising a movable base, a pedestal rotatably mounted on the base, a block mounted for sliding movement inthe pedestal, a screw mounted in the pedestal and having threaded connection with the block for vertically adjusting the block, a table hinged to the block, and means between the block and table for holding the table extended relative to the block and pedestal.
2. An article of furniture comprising a movable base, a pedestal rotatably mounted on the base, a recess in one side of the pedslamming action This prevents the estal, guides secured to the Walls of the recess, a block slidable on said guides, a screw mounted in the pedestal and having threaded connection with; the block for the vertical adjustment of the latter, a table hingedly supported on the block, means between the block and table for holding the table extended relative to the block and pedestal, and receptacles mounted in the pedestal beyond the block receiving recess. 10
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT TROTTER.
