PATENT. OFFICE.
JOHN HMIRAK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION BAYONET AND WIRE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 18, 1919. Serial No. 277,704.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HMIRAK, a citizen of the Republic of Czechoslovakia, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Combination Bayonets and Wire-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of bayonets and wire cutters and to provide a combination bayonet and wire cutter which may be manufactured at small cost and which will function efficiently and thoroughly either as a bayonet or as a wire cutter. 7
With the above recited objects in view and others of a similar nature, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in, and falling within the scope of, the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings The figure is a view in side elevation of a combination bayonet and wire cutter constructed in accordance with my present invention.
Referring now to the drawing in detail 1 designates the blade of the bayonet having cutting edges 2 and a point 3. One edge of the bayonet, at a suitable point in its length is formed with a slot 4 arranged at an acute angle to the cutting edge of the blade 1. In accordance with my invention, the wall of the slot 4 is contiguous to the outer portion of the cutting edge of the blade 1 and serrated as at 5, while the inner end of the slot is formed to provide a cutting edge. Rotatably mounted at opposite sides of the slot 4 immediately in advance of the cutting edge 6 are cutting rollers 7 which have their peripheries or cutting edges substantially in edge to edge contact for cutting purposes.
In practice, when it is desired to use the device as a wire cutter, the slotted portion of the blade is engaged with the wire and manipulated in such manner that the roughened or serrated wall of the slot and the cutter rollers 7 sever the wire. In the event that the wire passes the cutter rollers '7 before being severed, the cutting edge 6 at the inner end of the slot 4 engages the wire and completes the cutting thereof.
I claim 1. A bayonet blade with cutting edges havinga slot formed therein with its mouth at one edge thereof, the inner wall of said slot being serrated, cutter rollers rotatably mounted at the opposite sides of said slot adjacent to the inner end thereof and immediately in advance of said end and having opposed cutting peripheries.
2. A device of the class described comprising a cutting blade having a slot formed therein opening into one edge thereof, the wall of said slot contiguous of the edge of said blade being serrated, cutter rollers rotatably mounted at the opposite sides of said slot adjacent to the inner wall thereof and immediately in advance of such wall and having the cutting edges or peripheries substantially in edge to edge contact for severing purposes, the inner wall of said slot being formed to provide a cutting edge immediately behind the cutter rollers substantially as and for the purpose described.
