sIFTER POWDER-Box.
My invention relates to improvements in sifter powder boxes.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a powder box of the kind described, which will be attractive in appearance, which will be sanitary,'which may be easily operated, and from which vsubstantially all of the powder may be readily' removed through the small perforations provided for this purpose.
My invention provides further novel means for securely retaining the powder in the box and preventing its escape through the perforated top up to such time as the box reaches the purchasers hands and is to be used.
My invention provides further novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates -my invention, .Y
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved sifter powder box having a rectangular body, the cover being shown in the open position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical cross section of the box shown inFig. l, the cover being shown closed.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental top view of the box shown in Figs. l and 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of my improvement embodied in a box having` an elliptical body and cover, the latter beingl shown in the open position.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
Referring to the box illustrated in Figs. l to 3, the body of the box comprises, preferably, an outer upright box l and an inner inverted box 2 in which the powder is placed and which is closely fitted in and glued or otherwise secured to the box 1.
The bottom 3 of the inner box 2 forms the top'of the body of the sifter box. If desired, after the inner box 2 has been filled with powder, it may have its open end permanently closed by a sheet of paper 4, as shown in Fig. 2. The box 2 may then be Specication of Letters Patent.

inverted and slipped into and fastened to the box lV without any powder being spilled during this operation.
The top 3 'adjacent to one corner thereof is provided with a series of perforations 5, preferably radially disposed and, preferably, located closely adjacent to two adjacent sides of the body.
For closing the perforations 5, Vwhen the powder box is not in use, or for partly closing said perforations to regulate the discharge of powder therethrough, I provide a closure 6 which is centrally pivoted by a vertical pin 7 to the top 3 and which has radial arms for respectively coveringV the radially arranged perforations 5. For the purpose of ornamentation, the closure 6 may Y be star-shaped or shaped to represent a flower.
For covering the top 3, a cover 8 is hinged at one of its edges tothe upper edge of another side ofthe box l. The cover 8 prevents accidental displacement from its adjusted position of the closure 6, and prevents powder being spilled from the box when it is being transported in a trunk, satchel or other receptacle.
For preventing spilling of the powder through the perforations 5, prior to the time it is to be used by the purchaser, I fasten to the inner side of the top 3 an easily perforated closure comprising, preferably, a strip of tissue paper 9, Fig. 2, which covers the perforations 5. 4 Y
. When the powder is to be used, the paper 9 is punctured by means of a pin or sharp point of a lead pencil inserted through the perforations 5. Y
By locating the perforations 5, closely adjacent to one corner of the powder box, substantially all of the powder may be easily removed from the box. By locating the perforations closely adjacent to the'side of the body which is distant from the side to which the cover is hinged, the operator may easily sift the powder from the box while grasping with one hand the top and bottom and opened cover of the box, the cover for this V pivoted to the top 13 by a pin 10 tionof the boX shown in Fig. 4 is the same hinged at one longitudinal side to a longitudinal side of the box 10. The cover V12 is made toslip over the inneribox 11, the bottom 13 of which serves as the Ytop of the sifter boX and is provided adjacent to one end With perforations 5 Which are adapted tobe covered by a closure 6, corresponding toV the closure 6 already described; and
7. The operature shown and described, as modifications, Within the scope of the appended claim, may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim isz- A sifter powder boX having a polygonal body provided with a top having perforations closely adjacent to one corner only of Y the body, and a cover for the top hinged to a side of the body distant from said corner.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
MAR-THA K.TURNER.
