PATENT OFFICE.
CARMINE J. SALVIOLO, OFBROOKLYN; NEW YQRK; MICHAEL J. SALVIOLO EXE CU'I'OR OF SAID OARMINE J. SALVIOLO, DECEASED. I
CLOSUREFOR BOXES AND BOTTLES.
Specification of Letters latent. Patented May 25, 1920.
Application filed November 6, 1919. Serial No. 335,987.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARMINE J. SALvIoLo, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn,Kings-county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Boxes and Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures for boxes and bottles and comprises a spring retained lid loosely connected with a cap.
and having a thumb piece or handle and a depending finger, which latter penetrates the perforated cap and is engaged by the spring to cause the lid to normally close the perforations, but permits its elevation so that the contents of the container may be released. 1
These and other objects and details of the device are more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the appendedclaims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a container with the improved closure applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the lid unassembled.
Fig. 4 is 'a similar View with the parts assembled,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the details} The object of this invention is to provide a bottle or box that is to contain a liquid or a powder with a cap having perforations or a' small orifice and a spring closed lid, the parts being few and simple yet substantial and adapted to prevent evaporation, deterioration or loss of the aroma or strength of the contents of the said container.
\Vhen a box 6 of paper or metal 18 used, a cap 7, is secured thereon and has the perforations 8, and a slot 9, or instead of the perforesponding notches 17, into which the lugs fit. The plate before assembling is dished, as shown in Fig. 3, and'is secured in the lid by being pressed fiat so that on expanding thelugs will enter the notches and secure the parts together. The finger 12, is inserted in the slot 9, and the spring 14., inserted in the notch 13, and the spring will cause the lid to close.
The assembling is performed while the top 15, is removed, but when it is placed upon and secured to the box, the whole presents a neat and tasty appearance.
When itis desired to release the contents position and the piece 10, acts as a fulcrum drawing the finger through the slot against the tension of the spring. On account of the action of the fulcrum, the finger must be the arc of a circle for ease of operation and to secure the clearance of the lid from the openings.
It is obvious that the parts maybe otherwise arranged or modified withoutdeparting from the essential features above described or from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a closure, the combination of a container, a caphaving a perforation, a lid to cover the perforation, a finger penetrating the cap, and a spring at the lower end of the finger and within the container.
. 2. In a closure, the combination of a container, acap having an opening, and a slot, a lid to cover the opening and the slot, a depending finger passing through the slot, and a spring within the container and connected to the finger.
. 3. In a closure, the combination of a container havingan opening, a lid covering the opening and an adjacent slot, a finger depending from the lid and entering the container, and a spring within the container and attached to the finger.
4. In a closure, the combination of a container having an opening and aslot at its top, a lid to fit the opening and the slot, a finger depending from the: lid and penetrating theslot, and a spring within the container connected with the finger and adapted to close the lid.
5. In a closure, the combination of a container and a perforated nipple, a lid adapted to cover perforations in the nipple, an are shaped finger adapted to penetrate one of the perforations, a handle on the lid, and a spring Within the container and adapted to exert a tension on the finger.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, this 3d day of 10 November, 1919.
CARMINE J. SALVIOLO.
