' SEAT-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lVIay 18,1920,
Application filed January 12,1920. Serial No. 350,839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. CRABILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Seat-Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in benches or seats, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a novel form of portable seat which may be readily and easily assembled, without the necessity of using nails, bolts or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is capable of being folded into a small and compact article when the same is to be stored, thus reducing the space consumed in storing of the seat, to a minimum.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear asfthe description proceeds, the invention resides in the 001m bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the seat;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of one of the supports;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 49-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the supports in their folded positions, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmental view of the upper extremities of the frames of one of the supports.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device forming the subject matter. of the present invention, is shown in the form of a relatively long seat, and includes the supports 5, seat board 6, and back rests 7.
Each of these supports includes a pair of frames hingedly connected together as at 8, the same being disposed at an angle with relation to each other when the device is in its operative position, but when the device is to be stored, it will be seen that the frames of each support are moved into engagement with each other, whereupon the supports may be stored one on top of the other.
Each of the frames includes a relatively straight rear bar 9, and an angularly disposed bar 10, the bar 10 having connection with the bar 9 adjacent the upper ends thereof, the lower ends of the bars 9 and 10 forming surface engaging portions for the supports.
A front bar 11 forms a part of the respective frames, and as shown this bar 11 extends at a slight angle to the rear, terminating at a point substantially intermediate the heights of the bars 9 and 10, so that the bar 12-, which provides the seat rest may have connection with the bars 9 and 10 at points to provide a suitable back rest between the bars 12 and the upper ends of the bars 9 and 10.
The forward extremity of the bar 12, of each frame, has connection with the bar 11, also forming a part of the frame, by any suitable means such as bolts, screws or the like, the rear portions of said bars 12 being also secured to the bars 9 and 10 in a similar manner. I
A cut out portion 13 extends from a point adjacent the upper edge of the bar 10, of each frame, downwardly terminating at a suitable point to provide a shoulder 14;, for forming a stop or rest for the transversely extending board 7 which forms the back rest of the seat.
A strap 16 guards each of these out out portions, the strap extending from the upper edge of the bar 9 over the cut out portion ther'eoithe opposite end of said strap being bolted or otherwise secured to the forward edge of the bar 10, so that when the board 7 is positioned on the shoulders 14 of the supports, the same is held against displacement, and connects the supports to the end that the supports are maintained in proper relation with each other.
It will thus be seen that when the supports are properly positioned to provide a seat,
the seat board 6 is positioned on the seat rests of the respective supports, to the end that an eflicient seat is provided, the same being found in practice to be exceedingly substantial.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A portable seat including a plurality of 2 r r i 1,34:O,753
supports, each of the supports comprising a pair of frames hingedly connected together, an angularly disposed .bar forming a part of each frame, each of said angularly disposed bars having, a cut out portion,
formed adjacent the upper end thereof, a band having connection With each of the inclined boards and guarding the cut out portions thereof, a backrest positioned in 10 the cut out portions of the angularly disposed bars and contacting with the bands, and a seat board connecting the support. 7 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature
