BELL-BINGER.
Application filed September 30, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYNNE LA MUNYON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shoshone, in the county of Lincoln and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Bell-Ringer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in bell ringers, and more particularly to an improved construction and arrangement of striking device which maybe utilized in connection with a bell, such as a fire alarm, or may of course be used for various other purposes, an object of the invention being to provide a hammer which comprises a leaf spring and to which an oscillating movement is imparted, which movement is augmented by the structure of the hammer causing rapid and continuous vibrations of the free end of the hammer.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, the section being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
1 represents my improved hammer which comprises a plurality of leaf springs of varying lengths, the center spring or leaf being longer than the others and carrying at its free end a head or striker 2. The end of the hammer 1 is fixed to an enlargement 3 at one end of a bell crank lever 1, the latter pivotally supported on a bracket 5 secured to a base 6.
A. motor 7 which constitutes an electric motor is supported on the base 6 and serves to drive a gear train 8, the latter transmitting motion to a drive shaft 9. A crank arm 10 on the shaft 9 is connected by a link 11 with the bell crank lever 4 and the said crank 10 is of a length appreciably less than the length of the bell crank member so that its rotary motion imparts an oscillating motion to the bell crank lever.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Serial No. 327,549.
This lever at projects through a slot 13 in one end of a hood or casing 12 which incloses the motor and gearing andis connected to the base 6 in any approved manner. 14% represents a bell which is in the path of movement of the head or striker 2 so that when the lever l receives its oscillating movement,
it imparts this movement to the hammer 1 and the latter by reason of the fact that it comprises a plurality of leaf springs augments the movement, increases the vibrations, and thereby gives a rapid and loud alarm when operated.
This device is particularly adapted for use as a fire alarm, but may of course be used in connection with any alarm or signal device used. The gear train 8 operates to cut down or reduce the speed imparted from the motor and any number and arrangement of gears may be used to accomplish the purpose desired.
Various slight changes may be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A hammer of the character described, comprising a plurality of springs secured together at one end, said springs of different lengths, and a head or striker secured to the free end of the longest spring.
2. A hammer of the character described, comprising a plurality of springs of different lengths, the intermediate spring being longer that the others, and a head or striker on the free end of said intermediate spring.
3. The combination with a bell crank le LYNNE LA MUNYON.
