MECHANICAL DOLL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID ZAIDEN, a citizen of Russia, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jer-' sey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Dolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements 1n dolls; and the 1nvent1on has reference, more particularly,'to a novel construction of mechanically operated doll adapted to perform movements in simula-' tion of the socalled shimmy dance.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a construction of doll provided with a novel arrangement for mounting the arms in connection therewith in combination wlth a novel mechanical motor devlce for produclng a'rhythmic movement of the arms and shoulders of the doll in simulation of V the so, called shimmy dance.

Similar-characters of reference are employed in all ofthe hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts. v 7 Referring now to said drawings, the ref erence character 1 indlcates the body of a doll, preferably made of molded material in any suitable design, and provided in its trunk portion 2 with a hollow interior or chamber 3 having openings 4 leading therefrom at its opposite sides adjacent to the shoulder portions 5. The rear wall of said trunk portion 2, which constitutes the back of the doll, is provided with a centrally longltudinally disposedopening 6.

Said brackets 7 are provided at their oppoframe 8, said spindle having an outwardly projecting portion 12, which extends outwardly through the opening 6, and, upon which'is secured a winding key 13. The reference character 14 indicates a spirally wound motor spring, the inner end of which is secured to said spindlell, while the outer end 15 of which is anchored upon or fixed to the lower cross bar 16 of said frame 8.

Journaled in said frame 8 above said spindle 25 is an arbor 28 upon which is fixed'an escapement dog or anchor 29, the latter. having an impulse pallet 30 at one end, and a locking pallet 31 at the other end, which alternately cooperate with said toothed escapement wheel 27. Connected with said arbor 28, so as to be oscillated transversely by the escapement mechanism,
is an upwardly projecting lever 32. Mounted on the free end of said lever 32 is a transverse bar 33, the opposite free ends of which project respectivelythrough the openings 4 of the 'trunk-portion-2 of the doll. Fixed to the outer endsof said bar 33 are the arms 34t-of the doll. Connected with said frame 8 are a pair of parallel check or momentum stop springs 35 and 36, which straddle said lever 32, so that as the latter oscillates it will alternately be engaged by said springs, whereby its impulsive movement in each direction will be checked and reversed in synchronism with the operation of the-escapement mechanism.
The operation of the doll, constructed as above described, is asfollows z-- The motor spring 14 is wound up by turning the winding key.13 to rotate the spindle 11 in the. reverse direction,thus storing the renergy of the motor spring. When the wlnding key is released the motor spring begins to unwind thereby causing a rotation of the spindle 11 in an operative direction.
The rotation of the spindle 11 is transmitted through thedriving clutch 18 to the gear 20h The driving'gear' imparts, through the intermediate train 23, 24 and 26, a rotative movement; to the escapement wheel 27 The rotation of the 'esoapement wheel 27 acts 'uponthe escape mentdog or anchor 29 to causean 0scillation oftthe same, whereby the arborv 28 is rocked to in turnoscillate the lever 32. It will be apparent that the mechanism is very simple, and is of such a character that the dolls can be produced cheaply and with little labor.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my presentinvention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit-my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in said'specification, nor

spring motor mechanism"mounted in said frame, transmission gearing intermediate said spring motor mechanism and escapementmechanism, a lever carried and oscillated bysaid arbor, a transverse bar fixed to the free' ends of said lever, the respective free ends of said bar projecting through .at opposite sides adjacent tofthe' shoulder portions thereof with openings, a spring motor mechanism frame, brackets for attaching sa'id frame to said hody'and supported within the interior of the latter, an escapement mechanism mounted in said frame having an arbor adapted to be rocked by the operation of saidescapement mechanism, a spring motor mechanism mounted in said frame, transmission gearing intermediate said spring motor mechanism and escapement mechanism, a lever carried and oscillated by said arbor, a transverse bar fixed to the free end of saidfle ver, the respective free ends of said bar projecting through said side openings of said body, arm portions carried by the free ends of said bar, and a pair of momentum stop springs supported by said frame to straddle said lever so as to be alternately engaged by said lever when the same is oscillated.
4. In a doll of the kind described, a body having a chambered interior'and provided at opposite sides adjacent to the shoulder portions thereof with openings, a rotatable toothed escapement wheel mounted within said body, means for actuating said escapement wheel, an arbor carrying an escapement anchor cooperating with said escapement wheel, a lever carried and oscillated by said arbor, a transverse bar fixed to the free end of said lever, the respective free ends of said bar projecting through said side openings of said body, and arm portions carried by the free ends of said bar.
5. In a doll of the having a chambered interior and provided at opposite sides adjacent to the shoulder kind described, a body I of said bar projecting through said side openings of said body, arm portions carried by the free ends of said bar, and a pair of fixed momentum stop springs adapted to straddle said lever so as to be alternately engaged by said lever when the same is oscillated.
6. In a doll of the kind described, a hollow body having side'openings at its shoulder portions, a spring motor mechanism, an escapement device actuated by said spring motor mechanism, a lever oscillated by said escapement, a transverse oscillatable member actuated by said lever, said oscillatable member having oppositely extending free ends projecting through said side openings, and arm portions attached to said free ends so as to partake of the movement of said oscillatable member.
