To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM J. Nnsrr'r, a citizen of the United Statesl of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Heel-Cutting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in heel cutting apparatus, and it may be said to consist inthe provision ofv the novel and advantageous features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts and devices as will be apparent from the description and claims which follow hereinafter.
The main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved heel cutting apparatus in which the circular saw is mounted on a pivoted arm and slidable on said arm so that it can be adjusted transversely to the heel clamping device.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a novel and improved heel cutting apparatus which can be easily and quickly attached to or detached from the frame which carries other devices in use for repair work on boots or shoes.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a heel cutting apparatus of the character specified which is simple and compact, economical to manufacture, install, and use, easy and convenient to operate, and effective in action.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a careful consideration of the following description of the preferred construction embodying the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which j Figure 1 is a broken front elevational view showing the heel cutting apparatus mounted on the frame; Fig. 2 is a broken sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and showing the heel cutting apparatus in side elevation; Fig. 3 is a broken plan view showing the heel cutting apparatus; and Fig. 4

The frame 10 may be of the usual or any approved construction, and it has suitably arranged thereon the shaft 11 on which may be mounted the burnishing device indicated at 12, and also other devices, not shown, adapted to be used for doing repair work on boots and shoes. 0n the spaced bars 13 and 14 of the frame 10 are mounted the spaced supports 15 and 16 which are easily and quickly attached to or detached from the hollow bars 13 and 14 by having their ends provided with split sleeves whose parts 17 and 18 are clamped on said bars by the bolts 19 which connect the parts'17 and 18.
The heel clamping device may be of any Iapproved construction, that shown consisting of the coacting heel gripping jaws 2O and 21 which are carried by an adjustable mounting on the support 16. The adjustable mounting preferably consists of the split socket 22 which has its parts connected by the bolts 23 and is tted on a ball 24 which is provided with a stom 25 suitably secured to the support 16. The jaw 2O is attached to the socket 22 and is provided with an extension 26 having a guideway 27 in which is slidably fitted the extension 28 which is provided on the jaw 21. 0n the jaw 20 is a lug 29 which has thereon the pivot 30 on which is mounted the sector 31 provided with teeth 32 in mesh with teeth 33 on the extension 28. The sector is provided with an arm 34 having thereon the handle 35. The arm 34 has thereon the pivot 36 on which is mounted the dog 37 which is adapted to engage teeth 33 on the lug .29 to lock the sector 31 after the latter has been moved by the handle 35 to adjust the movable jaw 2l. The dog 37 may be disengaged from the teeth 38 by pressing up on the lever 39 which is pivotally mounted on the arm 34 adjacent to the handle 35 and is connected by the link 40 to the dog 37. A spring 41 is arranged between the handle 35 and the lever 39 to normally press against the latter so that the dog 37 is moved to engagement with the teeth 3S. The mounting for the heel clamping device is locked in adjusted position by turning the screw 42 which is mounted on the socket and has a pointed end adapted to engage the ball 24 when said screw 42 is turn-ed. v
A shaft 48 is mounted on the standards 44 and 45- which are suitably secured on the supports 15 and 1G. Against the collar 4G on the shaft 48 is pivotally mounted one end of the arm 47 which latter has on its other end the spaced bearings 48 and 49 in which journals the shaft 50 on which is mounted the circular saw or cutter 5,1. Between the bearings 48 and 49 is arranged the sprocket wheel V52 which is provided with key 53 which is slidably fitted in the longitudinalgroove 54 in the shaft 50 so that the sprocket wheel 52 is feathered on the shaft 5 9, The arm 47 is provided with a lateral extension 55 which has thereon the pivet 5 6 to which is connected one end of thelever 57 which has its other end provided with the handle 58. Between collars 59 and 6,0 on the shaft is arranged the sleeve 61 which is provided with pins 62 fitted in the slots 6 8 which are provided in the curved portion 64 ofthe lever 57 and in the curved strip 'G5 which is attached to the lever 57 by the bolts (i6. A leyer 67 is mounted on the pivot 68 which is 'arranged on the'lever 57 vadjacent to the handle 58, and said lever 6 7 is connected by the link 69 to the dog 70 which is s'ldably mounted on the lugs 71 and 72 ,which are provided on the strip 6,5 and on the lever 57. A spring 73 'arranged between the handle 58 and the lever G7 normally presses against the4 lever lG7 to have the dog 70 engage the teeth 74 en the eeteeson 55 Se that the lever 57 een be leeked in acljusted position. A spring arm 7 5 is attached to the collar 46 and bears against the un derside of the arm 47 and normally holds the arm 47 in raised position. The upward movement of the arm 47 is limited by the stop 7 6 which is attached to the collar 4,6. i The shaft 5,0 may be driven by any suitable means, that shown consisting of 'the lsprocket chain 77 which is connected to the sprockety Wheel 5,2 and to the sprocket pinion 78, which latter is secured to the sleeve 7 9 whieh is arranged between thearm 47and the collar 80 on the shaftA 43.` An electric inotor 81 has on its shaft 82 e Sprocket pinion 83 which is connected by the s orocket chain 84 tothe sprocket wheel 85 w `iich is secured to the sleeve 7 9.` The motor 81 may be 'suitably mounted Oe theeupileit 1,6, and the shaft 11 may be mounted in a bearing 86 which provided on the standard 4 4.y The shaft -1l, may be operatively connected to the sleeve7 9 by the s'pur wheel 87 which is secured to the shaft 11 and arranged in mesh the spur wheel 88 which latter is secured to the, sleev`e 7 9,

11. In heel cutting apparatus, the `combination of an adjustable heel clamping device, a pivotally mounted arm, a shafty slidably mounted 'on said arm, a sawon said shaft, and means including a sprocket wheel feathered on said shaft to drive the shaft.
2. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a heel clamping device, a pivota.lly mounted arm, a saw, a shaft'on which the saw is mounted, and means whereby said shaft is "slidably mounted on the arm so that the `saw 'can be adjusted transversely toward ror away from the heel clamping' del vice.
3. In heel cutting apparatus, the vcombination of a heel clamping device, a pivotally mounted arm, a spring arm arranged to normally support the first mentioned arm, a `saw-,and a shaft for the saw journaled adjustably on the first mentioned arm so that the sawv can be adjusted transversely toward or away from the heel clamping device.
4. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a shaft, an arm pivotally mounted on'said shaft, a saw, a shaft slidably mounted on said arm and having said saw mounted thereon, a sprocket wheel feathered on the last mentioned shaft, and suitable means to operate the sprocket wheel.
5. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a pivotally mounted arm, 'a saw, a shaft slid-'ably mounted on said varm and having the saw mountedthereon, a sprocket wheel Afeathered on the shaft, a stopad'apted` to limit the upward movement of said arm, and a spring arm arranged to normally slidably mounted on said arm so that the saw can be adjusted transversely toward or away from the heel clamping device, a sprocket Wheel feathered on the last mentioned shaft, suitable means to operate the sprocket Wheel, a stop adapted to limit the upward movement of said arm, and a spring arm arranged to normally support the first mentioned arm and move it to raised position.
