This invention relates to heel cutting apparatus `and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts and devices as will be apparent from the description and claims which follow hereinafter.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction by which the shoe heel can be adjusted horizontally or angularly or both, and in which the mounting or table for the heel holding device is pivoted on the frame so that the heel takes a curved path when itis moved past the cutter.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a novel and improved construction of the `nature specified which is simple and compact, economical to manufacture, easy and convenient to operate, and practical and effective in use.
Other objects and the advantages of thel invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a careful consideration of the following description ofone form of the construction embodying the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view ofthe heel cutting apparatus; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively an enlarged broken side elevational view and a plan view, showing the heel holding device on the pivotally mounted table.
Referring to the drawings, the upright frame 6 has thereon the forwardly extending arm 7 on which is mounted the substantially horizontal pivot shaft 8. On the shaft 8 is pivotally mounted the table 9, which is preferably suitably secured to the fianged upper part of the spaced substantially triangular frames 10 and 11, which have their lower part mounted on the shaft 8 and in contact with the collar 12 and nut 13 on said shaft. The table 9 preferably extends laterally beyond the frame 11 and it has thereon the heel holding device which is y preferably pivotally mounted on said table 9. 'The heel holding device may be of any suitable form; that shown consisting of the -plate 14 which is mounted on the' pivot 15 on the table V9, the lower heel clamping jaw 16 which is suitably mounted on the plate 14, and the upper heel clamping jaw 17 which is suitably mounted on the lever 18 which latter' is provided with a. handle 19 on its forward end and has its rear end mounted on the pivot 2O between the lugs 21 on the rear part of the plate 14. The
'pivot shaft S is preferably provided with a threaded portion 22 extending through lthe arm so that the shaft .8 can be turned by means of the handwheel 23 thereon or other suitable means to move the table 9 with the shoe holding device thereon toward or away from the cutter 24.
`The cutter 24 preferably consists of a bandsaw which passes around the pulleys f25 and 26 which are mounted on the shafts 29 and 30 which latter are journaled in suitable bearings 27 and 28 on the frame 6. rThe' shaft 30 may be operatively connected to the electric motor 31 which has on its shaft 32 a spur pinion 33 in mesh with the spur wheel 34 on the shaft 30.
Suitable devices indicated at 35 and 36 may be mounted on the frame 6 to guide and prevent displacement of the band saw 24.
The plate 14 may be locked'in adjusted position on the table 9 by turning the nut 37 which is fitted on the threaded upper portion of the pivot 15 and provided with a handle 38. l
Any suitable means may be employed to effect movement of the table 9 and consequently of the heel holding device to cause movement past the band saw 24 of the heel 39 of the shoe 40; that shown consisting of the lever 39 which is suitably attached to the frame 11 and provided with the handle 40.
An adjustable finger 41 is adapted to engage the frames 10 and 11 to limit the forward and rearward movement of the table 9, said finger 41 having an extension provided with slots 12 through which pass the locking pins 43 which are screwed into the arm 7.
F rom the foregoing the operation and advantages of the construction will be understood by those skilled in the art. It will be seen that when the motor 31 is operated to drive the pulley Q6 and thereby the band saw 24, and the heel 39 is clamped between the jaws 16 and 17 of the heel holding device, the shaft 8 may be turned to move the table 9 transversely to the band saw 2d according to the amount that is to be cut off of the heel 39. If a straight cut of the heel 89 is to be made the heel holding device is adjusted to have the jaws 16 and 17 disposed parallel to the band saw 24 and then the lever 39 is moved to turn the table 9 on the shaft 8 and consequently move the heel 39 in a curved path past the bandsaw 2li to have the latter cut away the desired part of the heel 39. When it is desired to make an angular cut of the heell 39 the heel holding device is turned on the pivot 15 until the heel 39 makes the desired angle to the band saw 2li whereupon the locking nut 37 may be turned to lock the heel holding device in the adjusted position.
The construction which has been particularly illustrated and described admits of minor changes and modificationswherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
I claim: y
1. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a frame, an adjustable substantially horizontal pivot shaft mounted on said frame, a table mounted on said shaft, a pivot on said table, and a shoe holding device connected to said pivot.
2. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a frame, an adjustable shaft thereon, a frame pivotally mounted on the shaft, a table secured fast to the last mentioned frame, and an adjustable heel holding device mounted on said table.
8. In heel cutting apparatus7 the combination of a frame, a substantially horizontal threaded shaft mounted on said frame, a frame pivotally mounted on said shaft, a table secured fast to the last mentioned frame, and a heel holding device pivotally mounted on said table.
4. In heel cutting apparatus, the combina tion of a frame, an adjustableshaft mounted on said frame, a frame pivotally mounted on said shaft and having a table thereon, a heel holding device mounted on' said table, and a finger on the first mentioned frame adapted to .engage the second mentioned frame to limit the movement of the table.
5. In heelcutting apparatus, the combination of a frame, a substantially horizontal threaded shaft mounted on said frame, a frame pivotally mounted on said shaft, a table secured fast to the second mentioned frame, a heel holding device pivotally mounted on said table, and a finger on the first mentioned frame adapted to engage the second mentioned frame to limit the movement of the table.
