To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMrr E. OARNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Extractors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in pen extractors and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the pen point may be withdrawn fro its holder with convenience and facility.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a tubular member having both ends open and wherein is arranged a clamping member movable longitudinally of the tubular member and adapted to engage a pen point inserted within either end of the tubular member.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved pen extractor whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section illustrating a pen extractor constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustratlng my improved extractor operatively engaged with a pen point;
Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the extractor as herein embodied;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line ll of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating an extractor constructed in accordance with a further embodiment of my invention.

ings, 1 denotes an elongated tubular member of predetermined dimensions and having its opposite ends open, and each of the end portions of the member 1 is substantially square in cross section with the walls thereof arranged on a slight taper, as indicated at 2. In practice it has been found of utmost importance to have the tapered end portions 2 of the member 1 substantially square or rectangular in cross section as this construction readily permits the insertion of pen points of various constructions and also reduces to a minimum the possibility of injury to the pen points especially when said points are intended to be used again. This construction of the end portions of the tubular member also renders the manufacture of the device much simpler.
3 denotes an elongated cylindrical rod of a length in excess of the length of the tubular member 1 and the opposite end portions of the rod 3 are tapered, as indicated at 4.
WVhen it is desired to remove a pen point from a holder the point is inserted within either of the open ends of the member 1 and pressure is then imposed upon the rod 3 at the end thereof remote from the inserted pen point and which results in an effective clamping of the point within the member 1.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Fig. 5 the tubular member 1" is of a construction substantially the same as has been set forth relative to the tubular member 1 but in lieu of an elongated rod thespherical body 5 is employed which is capable of movement within the member 1 intermediate the tapered portions 2 thereof.
To remove a pen point from a holder it is only necessary to incline the tubular member 1 so that the spherical body or ball will drop toward the end portion of the member 1 in which the point is inserted and which movement will result in an effective clamping of the pen point.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a pen extractor constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modifioation without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A pen point extractor comprising an elongated tubular member having an end open, the open end portion of the bore of said member being reduced, and a clamping member movably arranged Within the tubular member and adapted to coact With the reduced portion of the bore of the tubular member to effect a clamping action, the reduced portion of the bore of the tubular member being substantially rectangular in cross section said reduced portion serving to limit the movement of the movable clamping Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the member toward the open end of the tubular I of the bore of the tubular member being reduced, a rod disposed through the tubular member and of a length greater than the length of the tubular member, the opposite end portions of the rod being tapered and adapted to coact With the reduced portions of the bore of the tubular member.
