Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
Application led July 22, 1918. Serial No. 246,067.

Be it known that I, JOHN MONACELLI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medina, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in centering punches.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and easily operated tool for center punching or marking the ends of rods, bars or the like preparatory to turning or drilling such bars, rods, etc.
In the drawings, accompanying this specication, like parts are indicated by corresponding reference characters throughout, and in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section of my improved centering tool.
Fig. 2 1s an enlarged elevation, partly in lsection of the punch member for the tool.'
The centering-tool proper consists of a hollow cone-shaped piece 5 having at its reduced end an extension providing a neck 6. The neck from the outer end thereof is centrally formed with a longitudinal passage 7 that communicates with a larger passage which provides a ocket 8 for the removal of the' head 9 o the centering element. The head 9 has its outer end pointed, being of a vertical formation and its inner end is provided with a threaded recess 10. The threads inV this recess are engaged by the threads on a reduced extension 11 of the shank 12 of the punch or tool. The shank 12 has its outer end integrally formed in an enlargement providing a head 13.
The bar or solid tubular member 14 is arranged in the hollow conical portion 5 of the device, contacting with the side walls thereof. A blow is delivered on the head 13 of the shank 12 forcing the punch member 9 in the direction ofthe bar 14 and the pointed end 15 thereof against the inner end of the bar 14, thus centrally providing the bar or rod 14 with an indenture, and thus properly centering the bar or the like.
From the foregoing it is believed the simplicity and advantages of the Yconstruction will be understood without further description. The shank 12 is freely movable through the passage 7 of the neck 6, and when in the position illustrated in Fig. l the head of the punch is wholly received in the pocket 6. The weight of the punch will normally cause the head 13 to rest on the outer end of the neck 6. The tubular bar 14 when inserted in the hollow member 5 will contact with the pointed end 15 of the punch. This will force the shank 12 outward of the neck 6, bringing the punch in a vposition to be contracted by a hammeror the like while at the same time, the member 14, engaging with the flared inner wall of the member 5 will be properly positioned to be centered by the punch. The pointed end of the punch is, of course, more susceptible to wear than any other part thereof, and consequently I have made the portion 9 removable from ythe shank of the punch. By this arrangement worn points may be readily replaced. The head 13 limits the movement of the punch in one direction, and the member 9 limits the movement of the punch in an op osite direction.
, aving thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a device for the purpose set forth, a hollow cone-shaped member having its reduced end formed with an extension' providing a neck, said neck having a central passage therethrough and an enlarged pocket communicating with the passage at the juncture of the neck with thebody of the said member, a shank freely slidable through the passage in the neck, said shank having its outer end formed with a head and its inner end provided with a reduced threaded extension, and a pointed member having its body provided with a threaded socket receiving the threaded extension of the shank, and said pointed member desi snugly received in the pocket o the shank.
