Description

R. E. FORDICE. IROLLER SIDE BEARING. APPLICATION FILED JULY 15. 1916.
\ I INVENTOR.
' I 4? ATTORNEY inn , RAY E. FORDIGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CI-IAZY,
. NEW YORK.
ROLLER SIDE BEARING.
Application filed July 15, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAY E. FORDICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, of whichthe following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in roller side bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive side bearing for railway cars having means for automatically returning the roller to central or normal position after each actuation thereof.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1' is an end elevation of portions of a body and truck bolster of a car showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view of the improved side bearing and taken substantially on the line 9-2 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 3 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the body bolster of a ,car to which is swiveled the truck bolster 11 in the usual manner. As shown, the body bolster 10 is provided with an integral striking plate 12 for cooperation with the improved. roller side bearing, designated generally by the reference A. The said bearing A comprises a base casting B and anti-friction roller C. The base casting B is of substantially hollow box-like form with the side walls oii'set as indicated at 13-13 and the end walls curved as indicated at let-14, to limit the travel of the roller C. The latter rides upon a steel insert 15 located in the bottom of the base casting B. The base casting B is secured to the truck bolster by suitable flanges 16 through which pass the rivets 17.
The offset portions 13 of the side walls of the base casting are provided to accommodate the movements of the trunnions or bosses 18--18 on the ends of the roller C.
Specification of Letters Patent.
drawings,
Patented May 15, 1911?.
Serial No. 109,453.
At each end of the roller C, a bowed spring 19 is attached, as clearly indicated in Fig. 9.. Each boss or trunnion 18 is longitudinally slotted as indicated at 20 and has slipped endwise therein the bent end of the spring 19. The opposite end of each spring 19 is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the tread insert as indicated at 22. As shown, by the full and dotted lines in Fig. 2, the springs 19 are arranged oppositely, that is, one is bowed toward the right and the other toward the left as viewed in said Fig. 2.
In operation, as the roller is moved from one side to the other, the springs 19 will be straightened out and upon release of the pressure on the roller, the stored up energy in the springs 19 will automatically return the roller to central or normal position. The roller may be made in the form or a casting as can also thebase member B. The springs 19 may be cheaply manufactured and all the parts can be easily assembled as is apparent, thus providing a relatively inexpensive roller side bearing.
I claim:
1. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a base member, of a roller bodily movably mounted within said base member, and spring means for returning the roller to central position after each actuation thereof, said spring means comprising bowed.
springs, each secured at one end to the roller and at the other end to the base member.
2. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a hollow box-like base casting, of a roller mounted within said base casting, the roller having extended centrally located bosses at each end thereof, and a spring extending from each of said bosses to the base casting andconnected to both, the springs being adapted to return the roller to normal position after each actuation.
3. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a hollow box-like base casting, the side walls of which are provided with centrally located ofi'sets, of a roller mounted within said base casting and having bosses extended from the ends thereof and work- In Witness that I claim the foregoing I ing Within said offset portions of the base have hereunto subscribed my name this 13th casting, and a bowed spring at each end of day of July 1916.
the roller, each of said springs being con- RAY E. FORDICE. nected at one end to one of said bosses and Witnesses: at its other end to the plate which sets in Gowns A. BISHOP,
the base casting. ELIZABETH M. BRITT.
