ROCKER SIDE BEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14:, 1916.
Application filed October 22, 1914. Serial No. 868,012.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rocker Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rocker side bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a side bearing for railway cars which consists of few parts, that may be cheaply and easily manufactured and assembled and which will provide a bearing efiicient in operation.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices, as herein shown, described or claimed. And although I herein show and describe in detail one form of my improvements, yet I do not wish to be confined to the details shown and described, inasmuch as I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made in the arrange ment and details of the parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention and I contemplate all such changes and modifications as fall within the scope of the claim forming a part hereof.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevational View of a body and truck bolster of a railway car, showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2- is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. l and showing more particularly the improved side bearing, and Fig. 3 is a similar sectional "iew taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the truck bolster, which is swiveled in the usual manner to the body bolster 11 and, as shown, the body bolster is provided with an integral bearing plate 12 on each side of the king pin. Cooperable with each bearing plate 12, is one of my improved rocker bearwith a journal bearing 17, which bearings are open at the top to permit the insertion of the journals 18-18 formed integrally.
with the rocker C. The rocker C isprovided with a curved bearing surface 19 and converging flat sides 2020, the latter being adapted to cooperate with the flattened heads 21 of the rivets 15 to limit the rock ing movement as indicated thegdotted lines in Fig. 2. with an axially extending opening 322 and also with a radially arranged-opening 23,
The rocker *is, providedsee Fig. 3. On opposite'sides'of the opening 23 and near the top thereof are pro-- vided short slots 2424: in which is adapted to be seated a pin 25 inserted-through a loop 26 formed on the upper end of aspring 27, the lower end of the spring 27 being provided with a similar loop 26 through which is inserted another pin 29,
which is seated in suitable recesses 30pm vided in the base 1'; of the supporting bracket.
It is believed that the operation of my improved device will be apparent from the preceding description, and it will be noted that the parts may be readily assembled and disassembled, since the rocker is held to the bearing bracket B by the spring 27, which is attached to the rocker and the bracket at its opposite ends by the removable'pins 25 and 29. The spring 27 also serves the function of always returning the rocker to its central or normal position each time after it has performed its function as an anti-friction bearing between the two bolsters.
I claim:
In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a base plate having journal bearings therein, 0f a rocker having seated in recesses provided in the rocker and base plate.
journals positioned in said bearings, a spring extending between said rocker and base plate, and means for detachably connecting the spring at its ends to the rocker and to the base plate, said means comprising pins inserted through loops at the ends of said springs, said pins being re'movably CALVIN B. PATCH.
Witnesses:
CARRIE G. RANz, LUCILLE HIGGINS.
