The device forming ,the subject matter of" this application is adapted to be employed# for holding a rail to a tie, and one object ,of the invention is so to improve the construction of the tie that the saine will co-- operate with a movahle retainer in holding,r the rail.
Another object ot' the invention is to improve the construction of the retainer, both as to its forni, and as to the means whereinT the retainer is mounted on the tie adjustahiy.

The numeral 11 denotesl a rail including a hall 12, a wel) 1l and a flange 15. In practical operation, the flange 5 of the rail is lodged in the seat l, one sid portion of the Hanger 15 being received in the recess (i, and one side oi' the weh 1-'i abutting against the Vertical edges 7 of `the notches 5 in the sides 3 of the tiel. In this form of the invention, the set screw Q9 is threaded into the retainer 2'8, the retainer being devoid of the slot 20 of Fig. 3, and there boing no hole 10 in the base, to receive the set screw.
