Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 27, 1921; Serial No. 464,861.
To all whom t may concern: y
Be it known that we, GEORGE C. 'EICHEN- SEHR and JOHN E. NIESNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail fasteners and is especially adapted for use on mine ties.
Objects of the invention are to provide a fastener which will securely hold the rail on the ties; to eliminate the use of spikes or other securing means; to provide a fastener which may be quickly engaged with the tie and rail and likewise quickly and conveniently removed from the tie without disturbing either the tie or rail; and to provide a simply constructed, durable and inexpensive fastener the construction of which reduces possibility of displacing the fastener to a minimum.
Besides the above objects other objects will be apparent from the following description of the present preferred form of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

In the drawings a tie 5 is shown which preferably consists of asheet of metal arched upwardly midway its longitudinal edges and adapted to receive a rail 6 of conventional design. The tie is provided with a pair of T shaped openings or slots 7 one of which is arranged on each side of and in close roximity to the base fiange of the rail. lhe slots extend transversely of the tie and are preferably arranged approximately midway the opposite margins of the latter. Moreover the slots are by preference arranged in parallelism.
Fasteners made in accordance with this invention consist of bodies or plates 8 each of which has the lower end thereof formed to provide a base or foot 9 which has a neck 10 rising upwardly therefrom, the neck issuing into a head 11. The foot 9 may be relatively smaller than the head 11 as shown in the drawing, although if desired they may both be made of the same size. The foot is adapted to be inserted downwardly through the slot 7 as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, one end of the foot being inclined or beveled to p-revent binding of the fastener on the terminal wall of the slot, pursuant to which the neck l0 is urged into engagement with the head 12 of the slot. The fastener is then turned at right angles in which position the bottom of the head 11, at one end, will snugly engage the top of the tie while the bottom of the opposite end is reduced, as indicated at 13, for engagement with the top of the base flange of the rail. By reducing the head as indicated at 13 a shoulder is provided which abuts the free marginal edge of the base Hange as shown to advantage in Fig. 2. It will be appreciated that when the fastener is engaged in the head of the slot in this manner that lateral movement of the fastener is prevented due to the fact that the length of the neck is greater than the width of the body of the slot 7. When it is desired to disengage the fastener the head 11 is turned to permit the foot to be raised upwardly through the slot as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 8.
Various changes may be made in this device especially in the shape of the fastener, proportion and arrangement of parts without departing from the sp-irit and scope of the invention as covered by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A rail fastener for ties including a tie having a T shaped slot therein, a fastener for engagement in said slot with a portion thereof arranged above the tie and a portion below the tie, said fastener being engageable in the head of the T slot to prevent lateral displacement of the fastener.
