Application filed May 6, 1916.
To all whom/15 may concern.'
Be it known that Jer-1N H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention for improvements in garbage cans has for its object to provide within the cover of the can a receptacle for a disinfectant which is so constructed and positioned in the cover that the fumes of the disinfectant may be carried downwardly to and within the can, and also so that from any tilting or inversion of the can the disinfectant, liquid or otherwise will not be spilled or displaced from the containing receptacle therefor.
Another object is to provide in the cover of the garbage can, a receptacle for the disinfectant which is' easily removable and replaceable, whereby the supply of the disinfectant from time to time, as occasion renders necessary or desirable, may be replenished.
The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claim.
ln the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the garbage can and cover therefor, the latter having the present improved device embodied therein.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view, on an enlarged scale, as taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the central portion of the cover and the equipment therefor,-the receptacle for the disinfectant being understood as having a position preparatory to its connection or disconnection with the cover.
Fig. i is an elevation of the garbage can showing the cover hinged thereto and showing the disinfectant receptacle having a p0- sition depending from the cover instead of being located within an incasement of the cover therefor.
In the drawings, A represents a garbage can and B the cover therefor. The cover has centrally supported therewithin a circular disinfectant receptacle C comprising inclosing side walls a, a top wall Z) and a bottom wall d.

serial No. 95,932.
@ne of the latter walls is provided with a tubular member f extending from such wall toward, but terminating at some distance from, the opposite wall; and this tubular member affords communication from the interior of the disinfectant receptacle to the interior of the garbage can when the latter is closed by the cover for the dissemination of the fumes of the disinfectant as and for the purpose manifest.
As represented in Figs. l, 2 and 3, the cover is provided with a centralized upstanding circularincasing portion g having the partially circular or arc shaped plates t it in separation from the upper inner surface of the incasement g and having the ends thereof separated by the spaces a' a'.
The disinfectant receptacle has laterally extending lips j y' for engagement, by entrance through the spaces z' and under partial rotation, with the upper surface of the said arc shaped plates.
As shown the tubular member 7e carried by and opening at the bottom wall l of the m represents a bail or handle by means of which the cover may be lifted away from the can or replaced thereon.
ln Fig. 4 the disinfectant receptacle is connected with a circular incasement meinber g2 of comparatively slight depth and depending below the cover, instead of upstanding thereabove.
This is merely an adaptation of the device applicable on the cover for a sunk garbage can and which cover is hinged, for its permanent connection, to the can.
As clear from the illustrations of the construction of the garbage can as a whole and the foregoing description thereof, the space for occupancy by the disinfectant receptacle is comprised in the cover so that it is not only easily accessible at times necessary, but it leaves the entire space within the can available for the reception of garbage; and in the operation of the apparatus, no matter with what little care the cover may be removed, tilted or overturned, there is practically no liability of the liquid or other disinfectant becoming spilled out from the container therefor and wasted.
And it is also perceptible on an inspection of the drawings that the constructions by which the present improvements are constituted are oit' extremely simple character, practicable of manufacture at inappreciable expense, and so durable as to withstand long usage Without impairment or derangement.
l claim:
A garbage can, and a cover therefor provided with a centralized npstanding cylindrical incasing portion and having partially circular plates secured thereto and in Separation from the inner surface thereof and having the ends thereof separated one from another, a receptacle for disineotant comprising inolosing bottom, side and top Walla, the bottom Wall having a central upstanding tubular member open at both its ends and terminating below `the top Wall of the receptacle, and said receptacle having laterally extending lips for engagement With and detachment from the Said partially circular plates.
