To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ZIGMOND Venus, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Shelton, in the county of F airfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin- Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat pin point protectors.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a point protector of ornamental design adapted for looking to the free end of a hat pin for preventing accidents occasioned by the exposed point of the pin.

A further object of the device is the provision of a point protector having a removable cushioning member as well as a releasable automatic locking device, the protecting member being readily attached to and detached from the pointed end of a hat pin when found desirableg lVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts 3 throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hat pin provided with the present device.

Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the device operatively positioned upon a pin, a portion of the latter being shown.

The present drawing illustrates a hat pin having an ornamental head 11 fixed upon one end thereof, the protector 12 forming the subject-matter of the present invention being removably attached to the opposite pointed end 13 of the pin.

The protector comprises a substantially frusto-conical body let having an axial bore 15 entering the base end 16 thereof, acushion in the form of a rubber plug 17 being arranged within the said bore retained in position by a closure member or stopper 18 having screw-threaded engagement within the outer enlarged end of said bore.

A cylindrical casing 19 is screw-threaded to the contracted end of the body 141- being provided with a chamber 20 therein while a passage 21 extends through the casing 19 in alinement with a similar axial passage 22 in the adjacent portion of the body 14 for allowing the admission of the pin 10 through the casing and body into the cushion 17, as best illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A disk 23 is provided in the outer open end of the chamber 20 having a funnel-like central inlet opening 245; adapted to direct the point of the pin into the chamber 20.

Oppositely-arranged locking aws 25 having adjacent toothed faces 26 are pivoted by means of curved extensions 27 within seats 28 of the bottom of the chamber 20 while operating rods 29 are pivoted as at 30 to the said jaws and extend outwardly through the walls of the chamber 20. Expansion springs 31 are arranged within the chamber 20 upon the rods 29 normally positioning the jaws 20 in contact with each other or with any article positioned therebetween, such as the pin 10. Retracting levers 32 are pivoted upon lugs 33 carried by the free end of the casing 19, the said levers having pivotal connection with the outer ends of the rods 29. Push buttons 34 are oppositely arranged upon the levers 32 inwardly of the lugs 33 overlying the disk 23, it being understood that by exerting inward pressure upon the buttons 34, the levers 32 will retract the rods 29 against the action of the springs 31 for releasing the jaws 29 from the pin 10 while upon releasing the buttons 34 the jaws return to their normal engaging positions.

A serviceable device is provided in which the protector 12 may be forcibly applied to the pin point 13 when the pin 10 is extended through the hat of the wearer, the point being protected by the cushion 17 and the protector being retained upon the pin by the locking jaws 25. The device is readily applied to the pin and is easily removed when found desirable.

What I claim as new is A hat-pin point protector, including a body-portion having embedded therein a cushion having an elongated tapering bore,

a chambered member, with a tenon-like extended portion at one end threaded into a socket in said body portion and having a bore alining the bore of said cushion, said chambered member having a' tapered centering passage through one end thereof and spaced from said tenon-like extended portion, opposed normally contracting jaws having their inner ends pivoted in notches in said tenon-like extended portion, said jaws being slidably carried upon spring equipped rods, the springs of said rods exerting their pressure upon said jaws, said rods having pivotally connected thereto push-buttonequipped levers fulcrumed in slotted extensions of said chambered member.
