To all whom it may concern:

. Be it known that I, GEORGE P- -WIGGINTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders or Loose-Sheet Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders or loose sheet holders.

In the use of temporary binders for bold ing record sheets or leaves on which'it is declearly sired to keep records in typewriting a binder which permits the ready removal and insertion of the sheets without undue wear on the sheets is of great advantage. I have shown such a binder in 'my Patent No. 1,174,458, issued March 7, 1916, and this application is adivision thereof to the extent that the embodiment shown in Figures I, II and III was originally disclosed in that application and that certainclaims of this application have been transferred from that application to this. I, however, show still another embodiment of my invention herein.

The main objects of this invention are:

First, to'providean improved temporary binder or loose sheet holder-of the post type which permits the rapid insertion or removal of sheets or leaves and at the same time one in which the sheets are securely held when-the binder is adjusted to retain the sheets, 'the'sheets being freely removable when the binder is adjusted to release I Further objects,- and objects relating to structural details," will definitely appear from the detailed description to followe- I accomplish the'fobjects of' my invention. by the devices and means describedin the followin specification. The invention is defined and pointed out in the I claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, part of this specification, in which: I

The back iconstitutes a support for the adjusting screw 5 which is mounted in a centerblock 6 and oppositely threaded to engage the adjusting members I. These adjusting members carry arms 8 which ongage the inclined slides 9 on the clamping members so that when the adjusting members are moved outwardly by the screw the clamping members are separated.

The parts thus described are those of a binder commonly known as a metal back current binder, and as the adjusting features form" no part of my present invention and are well known in the art I do not describe 5. the same with further detail herein.

' The notches and holes are so spaced that the notches-may be engaged with the posts with the sheets in an alined body or they may be arranged with part of the sheets in an ofl'set relation withat least one notch of each sheet engaging one of the relatively 5 fixed posts. It will be obvious that the sheets may be offset on either side. The

' holes are so spaced relative to the notches that the removable osts can be inserted in the holeswhen the s eets are arranged in an 3 alined' body or when arranged with part of them offset in each direction, and when the removable posts are engaged and the clamping members 2 adjustedupon the same the sheets cannot be removed. When however,

the clam 'ing members are retracted and the removab e postsremoved the sheets are entirely free. The permanent posts however serve as a means for properly alining them to receive the removable posts and, as stated,

40 they are properly alined either in a body or g in an offset relation.

' In Fig. .IV I show my arranged in a'rack'consisting of and 'sidemembers 21, the side members improved binder beinn adapted to support the covers when the binder is disposed between them upon the base. This rack facilitates the use of the binder supporting the sheets so' that'thev can be conveniently removed to' receive t record and readily be inserted.

.The removable posts are made in several lengths, a post being selected according to the thicknessof the .sheet body. I illustrate these posts of difierent lengths in Fig.Vl

In the embodiment shown in Figs. VI, VII, VIII and IX I show my improvements adapted to a sectional post bmder consisting of binder members 22 and 23 having covers '24 hinged thereto. The binder member 22' is provided with threaded sockets .25- for thesectional posts 26- while the binder member 23 may be slipped over .the'post ind-pushed down uponthe sheet body;

. The binder member 23 is provided with a 'tratedv as suitable mechanisms are wellwear and injury to the sheets,

a base 20 clutch mechanism28 'coacting with the posts to retain the binder member 23 in its adjusted ositions thereon. The structural details 0 this mechanism are not further illusknown. The binder members 23 and 24 are provided with sockets 29 ,and 30, respectively, for the removable posts 15 which are retained by adjustingthe-binder 'or clamping members thereto, substantially as in the embodiments shown in Figs. I-III.

The sheets are notched and perforated substantially as described in connection. with the structure shown in Figs. I-III, and the sheets may be manipulated in the same manner. The binder members are, however, completely? separable and the structure is therefore adapted for use me rack or supporting devicesuch as is illustrated in Fig. a VI, the rack being similar to that shown in the application of George Farron, filed March 11, 1915, Ser. No. 13,826. The binders thus effectively support andretain the sheets and are capable of very convenient and rapid manipulation with'a minimum of and at the same time when the binder is adjusted to the sheets they are ve'rysecurely and effectively retained and bound.

I have not attempted to illustrate or describe all the modifications andadaptations which I contemplate or which might be desirable for adapting my improvements to particular types of binders, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.

,Having thus described myinvention what'I claim as new and desire to secure by- Letters- Patent, is:

1. In a temporary hinder, the combination of binder members provided with relatively. fixed posts and opposed post. sockets, means for adjusting said binder members, removable posts adapted to be en- 110 gaged with said sockets and being freely removable therefrom when said binding members are separated, and sheets havingnotches open at their binding edges and holes adjacent their. binding'edges, said removable posts being adapted to be inserted through said holes in said sheets, said notches-being adapted to be engaged with said relatively fixed posts.

2. In a temporary binder, .the combina- 120 tion of adjustably associated binder members, an extensible relatively fixed post operatlvely associated with said binder members, removable posts of different lengths adapted to be removably associated with said binder members, and sheets having U- shapedvnotches open at their binding edges adapted to be en aged with said permanent post, and; holes a jacent their binding edges adapted to receive a removable post when 130",

- 3. In a temporary hinder, the combination of a pair of binder members provided with relatively fixed extensible posts, and having opposed post sockets in their inner faces, means for adjusting said binder members, and removable posts of different lengths adapted to be removably engaged in said sockets and retained therein by the adj ustment of the binder members thereto and being freely removable therefrom when the binder members are separated.

4. In a temporary binder, the combination" of binder members provided with open post sockets, permanent posts extending between said binder members, and postsremovably engaged in said sockets, said removable posts being retained in said sockets by the adjustment of .the binder members thereto and being 7 freely removable from said sockets when the binder members are separated.

5. The combination in a loose leaf binder of binder members and binding posts, at least one of said posts being removably associated with said binder members, and sheets provided with a plurality of open notches in their binding edges spaced so that the sheets may be arranged in an alined body or part in different lateral positions with alined notches engaging one of the posts, said sheets alsohaving a plurality of holes adjacent their binding edges uniformly spaced relative to each other and relative to said notches so that there are registering holes adapted to receive a removable post when the sheets are arranged in an alined body or in different lateral positions with their notches registering.

6. In a temporary binder, the combination of binder members having a relatively fixed post and. a removable post associated therewith, and sheets having open unobadapted to be engaged with said fixed post and holes adjacent their binding edges adapted to receive said removable post when the notches are engaged with said fixed post, the-removable post retaining means of said binder members being within the planes of their sheet binding faces so that when the removable post is removed the sheets are all released and the sheets collectively as a unit or individual sheets may be freely disengaged from or engaged with said fixed post.

7. The combination of sheets havingholes adjacent their binding edges and notches open at their binding edges, and binder members provided with a relatively fixed post and a removable post, said notches of said sheets being adapted to be engaged With said relatively fixed post with the sheets in alinement or in difi'erent lateral members provided with adjacent their binding edges and notches open at their binding edges, and binder notches of said sheets being adapted to be engaged with one post with the sheets in an alined body or in difierent lateral relations, said holes being adapted to receive anotherv post when the sheets are in' an alined body or'in difierent lateral relations.

9. In a temporary binder, the combination of binder members, binding posts and sheets having notches open at their binding edges and holes adjacent their binding edges disposed so that the sheets may be supported in an alined body with a post engaging said holes or selected sheets may be supported in anofiset relation to the body of the sheets with their notches engaging a post.

10. In a temporary binder, the combination of binder members provided-With relatively fixed and removable posts, and sheets having notches open at their binding edges adapted to be engaged with said fixed posts and holes adjacent their binding edges adapted to receive said removable posts when said notches are engaged with said fixed post's, said notches and holes being uniformly spaced.

11. In a temporary binder, the combination of binder members provided with a relatively fixed post and a removable post, and

sheets having unobstructed notches at their binding edges adapted tobe engaged with said fixed post and holes adjacent their binding edges adapted to receive said removable post when the notches are engaged of the sheets.

- 12. In a temporary binder, the combination of a pair of binder members provided with a relatively fixed post and having 0pposed post sockets within the planes of their inner faces, means for adjusting said binder members, and a removable post engaged in said sockets, said removable post being retained in said sockets by the adjustment of the binder members thereto and being freely removable from the sockets when thebinder members are separated.

13. In a temporary binder, the combination of a pair of binder members provided with a relatively fixed post and having opposed post sockets within the planes of their inner faces, a removable post engaged in posts, the said said sockets, and sheets havingholes adjacent their binding edges adapted to receive said removable posts and U-shaped notches open at their binding edges adapted to engage said fixed post so that the sheets may be engaged and disengaged therewith individu tively fixed post and a removable post, said notches of said sheets being adapted to be engaged with said relatively fixed post, said holes being adapted to receive said removable post when the notchesare engaged with said fixed post, whereby the entire leaf body is free when said removablepost is removed and may be engaged and disengaged collectively as a unit With said fixed post.

' 15. In a temporary binder, the combination of a pair of adjustably associated binder members provided withopposed post sockets, an extensible relatively fixed post operatively associated with said binder members, and removable posts of different lengths adapted to be removably engaged in said sockets and retained therein by the adjustment of the binder members thereto.

16. In a temporary hinder, the combination of adjustably associated binder members, an extensible relatively fixed post operatively associated with said binder members, and removable posts of different lengths adapted to be removably associa with said binder members.

17. In a temporary hinder, the combina tion of a pair of adjustably associated binder members provided with opposed post s0ckets, an .extensible relatively fixed binding member operatively associated with said binder members, and removable posts of different lengths adapted to be removably engaged in said sockets and retained therein by the adjustment of the binder members GEORGE P. w eornv'ron.
