, BER DEVICE.
acaaii;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon P. VIGGIN- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Devices, of.
which the following is a specification.
'This invention relates to improvements in binder devices.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the handling of loose sheets.
Second, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the handlingof loose sheet or temporary binders.
Further objects, and objects relating to will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail planview of a binder device .embodying the features of my inven-' tion, the device being adjusted for the manipulation of the sheets.
Fig. II is a detail view, partially in vertical section, on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. I.
Fig. III is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. I, with sheets arranged on both binder members, one of the binding posts being shown in position.
Fig. IV is a detail section similar to that of Fig. III, with the post removed and the binder member holder adjusted to another position. v
Fig. V is a perspective view of one of the removable posts. a
Fig. VI is a detail elevation of the holder, partially in section, on a line corresponding v to line 6-6 of Figs. I, III and IX.
' Fig. VII is a detail view, partially in vertical section, on a line corresponding to line 7-7 of Figs. I and IV.
Fig. VIII is a detail perspective view of but Specification of Letters Patent. P t t 3p, may Application filed February 2, 1917. Serial No. 146,107.
the holder of the embodiment shown in Figs. I to IX, inclusive.
Fig. IX is a detail view showing the binder in its closed position. t
Fig. X is a detail view showing a modified form of holder in which the adjustable feature is omitted, the holder being adapted to a sectional post binder.
In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the embodiment illustrated in Figs. I to IX, inclusive, is an adaptation of the binder of Letters Patent No. 1,174,458, issued to me March 7, 1916, and comprises covers 1 and 2 formed with chambers adapted to receive suitable adjusting mechanism, not illustrated herein,
patent.
The clamping members 3 are pivotally mounted at the inner ends of the covers which are provided with arm-like hinge members 1. Binding strips 5 are arranged through holes 6 in the clamping members and extend into the covers to the adjusting mechanism.
The clamping members are provided with sockets 7 for the removable binding posts 8. The sheets 9 are provided with slots 10 adapted to receive the binding strips and with holes 11 adapted to receive the posts, the'parts thus described being those of my said patent.
To facilitate the manipulation of the sheets and the binder I provide a holder comprising, in the embodiment shown in Figs. I to IX, inclusive, a pair of yoke-like holder members 12 provided with oppositely disposed rests or binder engaging members '13 at their lower ends adapted to receive preferably that shown in my said in their adjusted relation by the link 16 which is pivoted at 17 and notched at 18 to engage the pin 19. p
In Fig. III the holder is'adjusted so that 5' its side members orarms are vertically disposed,
In Fig. IV they are adjusted so that 'one side member or one arm is'vertically disposed and the other inclined.
It is sometimes desirable to support the sheets so that their outer ends are fanned or stepped to facilitate fingering and to accomplish' this I provide the tapered binder member support 20 which may be slipped underone of the binder members, as shown in Fig. III, supporting the sheets at an acute angle to the holder and as the inner ends of the sheets abut the holder the outer ends are fanned or stepped. When it is desired to support the sheets in an inclined position and still maintain the right angled relation with the holder, the holder is ad justed so that its pivot arm is at right angles to the face of the support 20, as shown in Fig. IV.
With this arrangement of parts the binder members are held in proper relation and sheets may be arranged thereon with their ends abutting the holder and are properly alined to receive the posts 8.
To assist in aliningthe sheets laterally I provide sheet guides 21 which are preferably removably mounted'on the holder, the guides being adapted to engage with slots of the sheets, as shown. These guides are provided with headed studs 22 which engage the key hole slots 23in the holders and are also preferably provided with studs 2& engaging slots 25 so that the guides are effectively supported but may be conveniently disengaged as occasion requires. I
In the embodiment shown in Figs.- I to IX, inclusive, it is necessary to remove the guides before the binder can be closed, as shown in Fig. IX, as the clamping members 3 are not slotted to receive the guides.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. X the holder 26 is not adjustable. The structure there illustrated is adapted to receive a binder of. the sectional post type, the binder members 27 .being shown separated and disposed in the holder. Sheets, however, are shown as resting on one of the binder members and with the other binder member being shown in its closed position by dotted My improved binder device greatly facilitates the handling and manipulation of temporary binders and loose sheets. I have shown the same as I have adapted it for two types of binder, which, I believe, will enable the adaptation of my improvements to other types as may be desired. I have not attempted to illustrate or de scribe various modifications in structural demet i1 tails which I contemplate as the embodiments shown will, I believe, enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to adapt the structure as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
