Be it known .that l, lViLLiAM H. Miivnii, a citizen of the'United States, residing at in the ,county of Clinton and State of New York,'have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging forfRailway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description,
`reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention is, to provide and efiicient operation.
In the specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation,
partly in vertical longitudinal section, of a draft rigging embodying my invention, and illustratingf the parts in normal position; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section along line 2--2 of Fig. 1, but illustrating the position of the parts when in full buff Fig. 3 is a crossv section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. i
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 55 indicate draft members or parts of the car-frame to which the draft rigging is applied. Upper and lower stop members 6 and 7, respectively, draft members, each of the stop members consisting 'of a preferably channel-shaped member 8 having a horizontal web 9, and at either edge a longitudinally extending Harige 10. The iianges 10 of the upper member are preferably up-turned, and those of the lower stop member preferably down-turned rivets 11e-11 passing through the fianges 10 and the'ad] acent draft member, securing the stop members between the draft members. Each stop member is provided intermediate its ends with a vertical opening 12, the edges of the members S and 7 forming the ends of eachopening 12 being preferably in-turned, forming at the forward end an upper stop .shoulder 13,in the upper stop member, and a lower stop shoulder-14 in the lower stop member, at the rear end forming an upper shoulder 15 in the upper stop member, and a lower stop shoulder 16 in the lower stop member. Between the upper and lower stop members 6 and 7, respectively, are mounted the side links 17-17, the rear connecting key 18 passing through lateral slots 19--19 near the rear ends of the link 17. the ends of the key 18 extending through .longitudidrawings forming a part of this are secured between the "of the gear and in nally extended slots 20-20 in adjacent portions ofthe draft members to permit longitudinal movement of the key 18 therein. At their forward ends the links -17 are provided with transverse slots21-21 to receive the coupler key 22, which passes through the transverse slot 23 in the draw-bar 24, and' has its ends received in longitudinally eX- tending'slots 25 formed in adjacent portions of the draft 'members 6to permit the longitudinal movement of the key 22 in said slots. The slots 21 near the forward' ends of the links 17 are rearwardly extended to permit the rearward. travel of the key therein on buiiing movement of the draw-bar. Between the draft members and within the openings 12 in the stop members is mounted a front follower 26 and a draft gear 27. The draft gear 'comprises a shell 28 having a spring-cage 29, preferably at its rear end, and a friction case 30, preferably at its forward end, and preferably integral with the spring case 29. Within the spring case is mounted, in vertical twin arrangement, the spring elements 31, the said spring elements being preferably in two sets, the upper set 32 comprising the outer spring 33'and the inner spring 34 nested therein',the lower set 35 preferably comprising the outer spring 36 and the inner spring A slot 38 extends transversely through the spring-cage and between the upper and lower sets of springs for the passage of the rear key 18, said key being adapted to sup` port the draft gear between the draft memers. with a preferably integral plate 48 adapted to engage against the rear stop shoulders 15 and 16. The sets of springs are seated at their rear ends against the forward face of the plate L18, and at their front ends against the movable spring seat 39. The movable spring seat engages against the friction elements 40 within the friction shell 30. the friction elements including preferably the friction shoes 41' andv a wedge 42 adapted to spread the same. In preferable construction,.in normal position of the parts buting action, the rear ends of the slots 20 key 18 engages the rear in-the draft members simultaneously withA the engagement of the shell 28 against the rearstop shoulders 15 and 16, and also simultaneously the front 'edge of the slot 38, through the spring-cage, engages the front ledge of the key 18.
