DOOR STRUCTURE FOR GRAIN-CARS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pateted MBE. 2Q, 1917.
Application led June 24:, 1916. Serial No. 105,534.
citizen of the United States, and resident of Aniwa, in the county of -Shawano and. State and useful Improvements in 'Door Structures for Grain-Cars `and the like; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in doors, and is more articularly directed to the provision of an improved sliding door structure for association with freight cars 'adapted to contain grain or `other substances necessitating the provision of a tight engagement of the door structure to prevent leakage.
It is in general the object of the presentinvention tc simplify the structure and improve the eflicie'ncy and convenience of operation of door structures of this character,
and it is more particularly an object to pro vide such a door structure comprising up'- per and lower independently operable sec# tions. V y
It is further an object to provide an imvproved lever mean'sfor operating 'the door sections, whereby they may be held in engaging relation with the frame or may be held spaced outwardly from the frame to.
permit their being slidto an open position.
` With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the vnovel combination arrangement and formation of parts ymore particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is anfelevational view of a door structure embodying the present invention and with the upperv door section slid away from thc rloor opening.
Y Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. through the side of the carat the door opening with v'both of the door sections swung away from -the opening. l
Referring now rmore particularly to the accompanying drawings 5 designates the side of a car which is'provided with the door kopening 6, having the door seating ianges 7 at its inner side edges. Disposed on which are mounted wheeis 9 carried by brackets 10 connected with the outer, ends of upper "and lower door carrying frames ii and 12 respectively, the track bars 'being provided with 'longitudinal grooves 13 slid- -ably receiving-nger portions 14 `of the .grooves 17 in the side of the-car at one side of the door opening and plates 18 at the side edges of said'groove extended inwardly thereof to hold the rollers. At the opposite side of the door openings, the side of. the car is provided with holding channel sections .19 to hold the respective bracket rollers 16 when the door frames are slid -to closingl position. Carried by the frames are upper and lower door sections 20 and 21 respec-A tively and these door sections areach connected at its upper portion with its respective .frame by a pair of levers 22 journaled at the sides of the frame andl carrying pintles 23 jcurnally secured to the side of the door section and extending laterally therepast. The lower end of each section is journally secured to corresponding pintles 24: carried by links 25 pivoted to the lower side portions of the frame and these pintles 24 also extend laterally of the door sections.l
'Thus the .door sections may either lie within the door opening to provide a.tight closure therefor, -or lmay swing upwardly and 'away vfrom the-.door opening, whereby. their frames may be slid laterally of the door opening, to clear the same, the upper edge of the upper door section 20 being bevthe upper edge of the door opening, whereby the upper door section may ybe readily swung to desired positions. The door sections are firmly held in closing position by 100 bracket plates 26 at thesides of the door lopenings which are engageable by the eX- levers 27 are intermedately pivoted to the 105 lower bar of each door frame and have their Vadjacent ends pivoted together and their outer ends connected by links .28 with the levers 22. Thus upon rocking one of each pair of levers 27l a respective door'sec` 110 veled to correspond with a similar bevel of tion will be swung'. either to 'seating or un- ,seating relation withth'e, door opening .and
to provide a ready means for locking this lever'and for holding the door frame in either desired limit of swinging' movement, av combinedhandle and hasp bar 29 is hing-y edly connected" to the lever. adjacent its pivot-onthe frame and this bar is apertured e to` engage over either ofia pair of horizontally spacedstaples 30 on the lower sill of the ,frame. A pin 3l is loosely secured to `the.;frame to lock the bar on either staple v:'andvifv desired a suitable seal of conventional connection with out of seating relation with the door opening, levers intermediately pivoted to the frame and having their endsjpivotally .con-` nected, links connecting said second named l Copies of this patent may be obtained forvve cents each, by addressing the Washington, Il rf 'tively engage the holding members.
2. The-combination with a wall having a dooropening 'of a door carrying frame slidably mountedvadjacent the door opening, a
door, links pivoted to the frame, lateral pintles carried by said links and journaled at the sides lof the dooi1l whereby the door is held to swing into and out of seating relation with the door openings, 'said pintles projecting outwardly of the door` and bracket members a't the Vsides 'of the door *open'ing adapted to receive said pintles.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing AI have hereunto setmy hand at Aiwa, 'in the county of Shawano andStatepof Wis-l consin, in the presence of two witnesses.
