To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I,FRANK J. GILROY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Cars, of which the following is aspecifi cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The object of thisinvention is to provide cars adapted to serve, without change or addition, for a wide range of uses, and to serve in each case more satisfactorily than the special car usually employed for the specific purpose. .The same car answers perfectly for carrying ordinary merchandise, grain or other loose granular material, or automobile or other goods too large to pass into any ordinary car. The car is provided with two contiguous, oppositely sliding main doors placed edge to edge, and one of these doors has in its upper part a small doorforloading granular material. Both the main'doors are adapted'fo'r continuous marginal engagement, when closed, with flanges on the car itself. When the car is to be used" like an ordinary box car, the loading door is closed and internally locked and one of the main doors is so secured as to have all the strength of a part of the car wall, which it virtually becomes. When granular material is to form the load, the
, loading door is opened and then both main doors are closed and locked. When the loading is completed, the small door is closed and automatically lockedon the inside, so that it can not be again opened'until the main doors are opened. When automobiles or similarly large pieces of freight are to be carried, both main doors are opened for loading and then all the doors are closed and securely locked.

Below the door opening'and extending in each direction therefrom along the out side of the car is a fixed track G'forined by the upturned marginalportion of 'a plate Gr bolted to the car. Directly below the door opening this plate is widened and its upper marginal portion is bent outwardly and then downwardly to form a hook or continuous flange G At each door post an analogous vertical flange on the post extends from the lower. to the upper side of the opening, and over the upper side of the opening 'is an analogous downwardly projecting flangeG. Two doors "H, -H cover the whole opening, the beveled vertical edge of one overhanging the contiguous oppositely beveled edge of theother. Both are supported below by rollers I resting upon the track G, and both havebelow upturned marginal flanges J I which engage the flange G and at their outer lateral margins analogous inwardly turned or hooked flanges J 5 engaging the vertical flanges respectively, of the door posts when both doors are closed. The upperv margins of both doors slide beneath the flange G, and the overhanging edge'of one door prevents the independent outward springing 0f- 'floor of the car to a head jamb or lintel above the door opening and slides bodily with the door to which it is secured. To the lower end of this post is rigidly fixed a heavy metal member L grooved below in,
or parallel to, the plane of the door toslide-f over a strong metal lug M projecting from a block M sunk in'the floor and loolted'to the car sill. A stop shoulder L limits the sliding in one direction, and a sliding bolt L automatically looks it against return movement when that limit is reached.
At its upper end the post carries a block N which, like thatat the lower end, is pref-' erably of malleable iron or steel, adapted to slide as the door closes, behind-a block 0, securely fixed to the frame of the'c'ar, and to belocked against further vzllinytin'g by a pin P;' From the constructionit is plain that the post will resist any ordinary outward thrust upon itself or either door and that when the door to which it is secured is closed, this door offers even greater resistance than other portions of the car wall. lvioreover, the engagement of the door and car flange at the upper, lower and rear or outer edge is such that granular material cannot pass, great pressure tending to make escape more diflicult, if possible. This door being thus closed and the post locked in place, the other door may be used as if the first door were a part of the car wall. Obviously when it is closed its forward margin lies beneath or within the overhanging edge 0t its companion and all its other edges are in engagement at all points with flanges fixed to the car. This door is provided with small oppositely sliding loading doors CZ having locking devices (.Z not accessible from outside the car.
As has been stated, ordinarily the door secured to the central post is kept closed, but when necessary the post-locking bolts are withdrawn and door and post are moved aside together leaving a greatly enlarged door opening.
It is to be observed that whatever the position of either door or the central post, all parts are securely held against moving from their normal plane into position for injuring passing cars.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a car having a continuous, door-overlapping flange extending along the upper side of a wide door opening, continuous external flanges extending along all the remaining sides of that opening and turned from said opening, of
two doors arranged to slide oppositely within the flange first mentioned and provided with hooked flanges to engage at every point when the doors are closed, the lower and lateral flanges around said opening, the edge of one door being adapted to overlap the meeting edge of the other door and being made substantially as inflexible as the body of the car wall.
2. The combination with a grain and automobile car having a continuous external, door-overlapping flange along the upper side of a wide door opening, and continuous external flanges turned from said opening and extending along the remaining three sides thereof, of two oppositely sliding doors of thin metal, meeting centrally with respect to said opening and one passing within an overhanging margin of the other, a displaceable vertical beam extending from top to bottom of the opening, overlapped by both doors and secured to the door having the overhanging margin to keep it rigidly rectilinear; both said doors sliding within. the flange first mentioned, provided with deflection-resisting reinforcement along their upper margins and along. their lower and non-meeting margins with hooked flanges to engage, when the doors are closed, the corresponding flanges around said opening.
5. The combination with a car having a continuous door-overlapping, external flange along the upper side of a wide door opening, continuous external flanges turned from the opening and extending along the remaining sides thereof, and a track below said lower flange of two doors arranged to slide oppositely within the flange first mentioned and provided with hooked flanges to engage, at every point when the doors are closed, the lower and lateral flanges around the door opening, and with rollers to run upon said track, one door being provided in its upper part with small internally looking grain doors, and the edge of one door being adapted to overlap the meeting edge of the other door and made substantially as inflexible as the body of the car wall.
4. The combination with a car having on all sides of its wide door opening continuous door-engaging flanges and provided. at the upper and lower sides of said opening with heavy metal stops fixed to the frame of the car centrally of the opening, of op positely sliding doors of thin metal having all their margins stifl ened by inwardly turned hooked flanges and all outer margins held when the doors are closed, at all points, by the flanges, respectively, about said opening, and the margin of one door overhang ing the meeting marginof the other door, and a T-beam fixed to said overhanging margin and adapted to slide into and out of engagement with said stops as its door closes and-opens.
