LAMP-HOOK FOR CABS.
Specification of-Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 13, 1917.
Application filed February 7, 1916. Serial liTo. 76,826.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SEWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Hooks for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamp hooks for cars, the same being designed for use as an emergency lamp holder or hook which may be quickly engaged with and suspended upon the ladder and hand rails which are found on all freight cars and usually located both on the sides and ends of a box car, the object in view being to produce a device of the character referred to which will maintain itself in a certain position and relation to the car body and the supporting rail and also enable a lamp to be detachably held thereby, the formation of the hook being such as to prevent swaying of the lamp in actual traffic.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lamp hook of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the relation of the lamp holder to one of the hand and foot rails of a box car.
Fig. 3 is a. vertical sectional view showing the relation of the hook to a car body, and a lamp supported thereby.
The emergency lamp hook or holder contemplated in this invention comprises a lamp socket 1 embodying the. base 2 and the inwardly extending flanges 3, the space between the flanges and the base being left open at the top and being closed at the bottom by a stop 1. The socket thus formed is adapted to receive the shank 5 of a lamp 6 so that the lamp may be readily inserted in and removed from the socket.
At the upper end of the socket and extending perpendicularly thereto is a horizontal cross arm 7 of any desired length the same being provided at its opposite ends with vertically disposed hooks 8 having downturned end portions 9, the said hooks being adapted to fit over a hand and foot rail 10 on a box car, either at the side or at the end of the car.
At its lower end the socket is provided with another cross arm 11 extending at right angles thereto and provided at its extremities with inwardly extending offsetting legs 12 which are adapted to rest against the body of the car, the length of said legs being such as to sustain the socket 1 in a substantially vertical position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will now be understood that the lamp holder either with or without the lamp may be suspended upon any desired hand and foot rail on either side or on either end of a box car body. The device is especially designed as an emergency appliance, to be used in case the ordinary lamp holding socket on the car body becomes broken or detached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A lamp supporting hook applicable to the horizontal hand and foot rails of car bodies comprising a lamp receiving socket, a normally horizontal cross arm extending across the upper end of the socket and provided at its opposite ends with hooks having downwardly extending end portions, and another normally horizontal cross arm extending across the lower end of the socket and provided with inwardly extending oflsetting legs adapted to rest against the car body.
2. A lamp supporting hook for the purpose specified comprising a lamp holding socket, suspending means therefor embodying a pair of hooks arranged in spaced relation to each other and adapted to be brought into engagement with one of the hand and foot rails of a box car, and offsetting arms located in a lower plane than the suspending means and adapted to terminally rest against the car body to hold the socket in an upright position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE ALFRED SEWARD.
