Specification of Letters r'atntz Pat e'ntedJu-ly 13,1915.
Agents-ties filed swam-ems, 191's; Serial no. 864,115.
My invention relates to improvements door checks and holders, the object of the invention being: to-provide improved means for holding the door'in openposition, and
improved means forpreventing the door from banging when closing: I,
A further object is to provide a; door holder consisting of two members adapted to be secured either in ali'nement or at right angles to each other, so that the holder may be used in connection with either a verticali or horizontal support, and provide a door check consisting of a dash pot secured to the door frame, and a bracket carrying a plunger and secured to the door, the bracket adapted to be engaged by the holder when the door is open and securely held thereby.
A further object is to provide improvements of the character stated which are especially adapted for use on car doors, but may, of course, be used in connection wlth other doors such for example as screen doors or outside doors having means for forcing them to closed position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section showing the door closer with the plunger located in the dash pot. Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the two members of the door holder, and Fig. i is a view in cross section on the line H of Fig. 3.
1 represents a door frame, 2 a door, and 3 a vertical wall located at right angles to the door frame 1. On the frame 1, I secure my improved cylindrical dash pot 4, the latter having perforated ears 5 for the reception of screws 6 to secure the same to the frame, and at the inner end of the dash pot, I provide a relatively small passage 7 for air.
8 indicates a bracket which is securedby screws?) totl'ie d'oor'2, and at its upper end is provided with a laterally projecting arm 10 having at its rear end, anupwar'dly projectng lug-.11, thela tter' having anintegial rod 12 thereon positioned parallel with the arm 10'- andcarrying' at it's-free end a cup plunger' 13'Wh1 ch: is adapted to move in the dash pct 45, and prevent banging of the door in closing: It is, of course, tobe understood that thedashi pot and plunger will be so positioned that the'do'o'r can move readily,
resisted" only by the movement of air in the dash" pot.
Theupwardly projecting lug 11 is adaptedto' be: engaged by my improved holderto secure" 131 16" door" in open position; This holder consists of two members 14 and 15,.
member 14' having a perforated base 16 for the reception of securing devices to secure the same in place. I have illustrated in Fig. 1, the said base 16 secured to the upright wall 3, so that the post 17 on the base is positioned horizontally. This post 17 is rectangular in shape, and at its free end, at opposite sides, is provided with transverse grooves 18, and is also provided at opposite sides with longitudinal grooves 19 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The member 15 consists of two elastic gripping aws 20 having a spacing block 21 between them. The block 21 is relatively short, and is preferably provided with tenons 22 located in recesses 23 in the spring jaws, and rivets 24: are projected through the block and through the spring jaws, rigidly securing the parts together.
The spring jaws 20, at their outer ends, are flared apart as shown, and are provided with inwardly projecting beveled lugs 25 which engage the lug 11 of bracket 8. In other words, the lugs 25 are spaced apart a distance appreciably less than the thickness of the lug 11, so that the latter in entering between the spring jaws, must first spring the jaws apart, so that the jaws will grip around the lug 11, and securely hold the door in open position until a suflicient pressure is had to spring the jaws 20 apart and release the lug 11. The inner ends of the spring jaws 20, on their opposed faces, are provided with longitudinal flanges 26 which are adapted to be positioned in either of the pairs of grooves 18 or 19 in accordance with the angular disposition of the member 15.
In Fig. 1, Where the member is located longitudinally relative to the post 17, the flanges 26 are in the grooves 19, and a pin 27 is projected through the post 17 and the jaws 20, and securely holds the parts together.
When the member 14 is secured to the ceiling or to the floor, it is necessary to have the member 15 at right angles thereto, in which event, the flanges 26 will be positioned in the transverse grooves 18, as will be readily understood, particularly by reference to Fig. 3.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my 1nvention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for adapted to be secured to a door and carrying a plunger movable into and out of the dash pot, and a holder adapted'to be secured to a fixed support and having spring jaws adapted to engage and hold the bracket, substantially as described.
2. A holder of the character described, comprising two members, one member consisting of a base with a post thereon, the latter having longitudinal and transverse grooves at its free end, the other member consisting of tWo spring jaws having a block located between them and spacing them apart, said jaws at one end having on their inner faces longitudinal grooves adapted to be positioned in either of the grooves on the post, said post and jaws having registering openings, and a locking device in said openings, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
