vT0 all whom t may concern and ADoLrH J. PRUsZrNSKI, citizens of the c United States, residing at lNoodstock, in the and State of `lllinois, have invented certain new and useful. l-m provements in Paper-Edge Guides, of which the following is al specification.
This invention relates to typewr1ters,vand
moreparticularly to that portion of the paper feeding mechanism of a typewriter by means of which the edge of the paper is guided during its feeding movement in positioning the paper and as it is 'fed to the printing mechanism. v
The principal'object of the invention is an improved construction, combination land arrangement of parts .for accomplishing the result above mentioned. r Other objects will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a paper edge guide constructed in accordance with the principles of our invention and applied to the paper table of a typewriter; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the rear of a paper table to which the guide is connected; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a supporting bracket.
1n order to facilitate the proper feeding of paper or other material to the platen of a typewriter, it is convenient to have a guide, usually at the left-hand side of the paper table, against which the left-hand edge of the paper is pressed, for quickly and accurately placing paper to provide a predetermined to assist in alining the paper so it will be straight upon the platen. By making the paper edge guide adjustable, margins of various widths may be made, and the typewriter is more readily adaptable for use in writing forms and the like where a number of sheets of the same size are to be inserted one after the other.
In the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 5 designates generally a paper table to which this paperv edge guide. may be applied. It is usually mounted in end plates 6 of a typewriter carriage or movable sub-carriage in which is a rotatable platen 7, a cross-bar 8 usually connecting the end plates 6 and forming a rest against which the paper table is moved. 1n its preferred n PAPERT'EDGE GUIDE. l l
Specification of Letters Patent..l
'ears 9 at the' ends, by means of which it is .plvoted in the end plates.
Secured to the paper table at the rear thereof, is a bracket 10 having bent extremities 11 in ea'eliof which is a recessed slot 12. Thisbracket may be secured tothe table by rivets. 13 or other suitable fastening devices. The guide proper consists of an arm 14 slid able in the slots 12 of the bracket member 10 and preferably formed with a central longi tu dinally extending groove 15 pressed in the material on one side forming a strengthening rib on theother side. arm is provided with a stop .16 preferablyv consisting of a nut .and screw secured thereand at the other end Lit. isv formed with a bent portion 17 extending over `the upper side ofthe paper table 5 and down over the front or upper face thereof. The left-hand edge of the portion that is bent over the front of the paper table,- is turned upwardly at right angles to form an abutment 18 which extends transversely across the paper table and at right angles to the axis'of the.4
platen, so that when the left-hand edgeof-a sheet of paper is pressed against the upstanding edge of the guide the paper will be fed in proper alinement to the platen.
1n order to hold the.` paper edge guide firmly vbut yieldingly in any position at which it isplaced, a spring 19 is pressed in the bracket and bears against the arm 14 of the guide, tending to hold it firmly in place in the slots 12. This spring is preferably formed with the extremities rounded outwarolly from the central portion and with proiections 2O formed in the extremities which are adapted to engage In the groove y 15 of the member 14, so that the extremities slots in the bracket.
We claim: y
1. A paper edge guide comprising a slotted guide, .a member slidable therein having a bent portion at one end to prevent it sliding from the support, anda removable p `Patented Feb. 2%, 191'?. Application filed August 30, 1915'. Serial No. 47,915.- Y
p the stop 16 the. 'guide may be inserted or removed from the anoLPI-rajrnuszrnsrrr, for woonsTocK, ILLINOIS, AssIGN- At one end, this
stop at the other end toprevent the member sliding Vfrom the support, and a spring to hold the member yieldingly in place.
2. A paper edge guide comprising a paper table, a bracket secured to the table and ends bent therefrom with recessed slots therein,
and a member having an arm slidable inthe slots with an extension thereof bent over the top of the table to the opposite side thereof.
3. A paper edge guide comprisinga member with a portion adapted to engage; the edge of paper and an arm extending therefrom having a strengthening rib extending longitudinally thereof, and a single support with opposite ends formed with recessed slots in which the said arm is slidable.
4. A paper edge guide comprising a paper table, a support at the rear thereof having outstanding parts with recessed slots therein in alinement longitudinally of the table, a member having an arm slidable in the said slots with a guide portion extending over the edge of the table tothe oppositev face thereof, and a spring tending to press the member outwardly in the slots-to hold it yieldingly in place and to hold the portion on the opposite side of the table adjacent the face thereof.
5. A paper edge guide comprising a paper table, a support at the rear thereof comprising projecting slotted portions, a rmember having an arm with a groove slidable inthe said slots with a paper guiding portion extending to the opposite side of the table, :1nd a spring' disposed between the paper table Y and the arm having projections to engage in the groove of thesaid arm for holding the arm in place.
6. A paper edge guide comprising a paper table', a bracket secured tothe rear thereof having extremities bent away from the table with a slotted recess in each extremity, a member having an arm slidable in the said slots, another' arm extending over the upper edge of the paper table and Vwith an angular portion one side of which lies parallel with the front face of the paper tableV and the other side of which stands out at right angles thereto forming an abutment for the edge of the paper, Yand means to yieldably hold the said member in any adjusted positio-n to which it may be slid. Y
7. The combination with a paper table, of a supporting bracket secured to the rear thereof having spaced parts with recessed slots, a paper edge guide having an arm slidable in the slots andv a guide' portion extending over the top edge of the paper table, and a spring interposed between the arm and the bracket, and between said slotted parts to hold the guide yieldingly in any position.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification, onthis 27 th day of August, A. D. 1915.
