SCREW-HOLDING- DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. CowE L, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook 'and'State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in removable screw-holding devices to be used on various forms of screw drivers and consists of a simple and efiicient device of this nature so arranged that the head of a screw may be clamped and held while being set, the jaws being thrown automatically out of the path of the free end of the screw-driver for use in turning the screw.
The invention consistsof a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the.
accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is aside elevation ofthe device. Fig. 2. is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4.4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of one of the concaved hinged fingers, and Fig. 6 is a detailview- Specification of Letters Patent.

adapted to receive said arms K. The disk is provided with oppositely disposed slots for the reception of the contracted ends N of the members 0, which contracted" porthe walls of the recesses having offsets N tions N are bent to form rolls and have pivotal connection with the slots, as shown. A coiled spring R is interposed between the slotted portion of the bar K and the outer inclined convexed surfaces of the members O and serves to normally hold the jaws a slight distance rearward of the forward free end of the screw driver.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood and is as follows: When it is desired to hold a screw for setting the same the collar may be pushed forward, causing the jaws to move inadvance of the free end of the screw driver and, as the claw B moves forward, the arms of the jaws beingat slight angles to each other, will cause the jaws to open to receive the head of the screw, the tapering portion of the head of the screw being held against the concaved surface of the jaws. The spring will then tend to hold the screw. against the jaws while the screw is being set. When the screw is turned, the jaws will draw back behind the forward free end of the screw driver, allowing the end of the same to project sufficiently to be and preferablyroughened orcorrugated on j the inside to more easily fasten to the blade when the spring is pushed ahead, and it will be noted that the more the claw is pushed forward the tighter the spring will press upon the tongue.
What I claim to be new is A removable screw driver attachment,
comprising a collar having a pair of projectlng toward the collar, and a coiled In testimony whereof I hereunto afiin my slgnature 1n presence of two WIiJIIGSSQS,
