FILE.
Application filed February 7, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALKER MAYFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scottsville, in the county of Allen and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Files, of which the follow= ing is a specification.
The invention relates to memorandum holders or files, and more particularly to the class of prescription files. I
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a prescription file of this character wherein a predetermined number of prescriptions can be held to facilitate handling thereof and at any time a particular prescription may be inspected in the stack without requiring the removal of all or any of the prescriptions from the file.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a prescription file of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form to enable convenient handling thereof without resultant disorder of the prescrip:
tion sheets thereon or the loss of any of the same while the file is in use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a prescription file of this character wherein the prescriptions can be placed thereon in order with despatch and alsowhich may be readily removed should'the occasion require.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a prescription file of this character which. is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily handled, thus assuring perfect order of the prescription sheets when clamped'thereon as well as enabling any one of the prescription sheets to be read with ease and also which is reliable and efiicient in its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a file constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing prescription sheets thereon, certain of the latter being clamped back for the inspection of a particular pre- Specification of Letters Patent.

view showing a still further modification of I the invention.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings. v
Referring to the drawing in detail, the file comprises a main or base plate 5, preferably of rectangular shape, although the same may be of any other desirable shape and of any size convenient to the user, the upper edge of said plate being formed medially thereof with a hook 6 to permit the detachable hanging of the plate within a prescription cabinet or upon a. suitable support.
Formed at the longer edges of the plate 5, near opposite ends thereof, are pairs of ears 7 and 8, respectively, which are bent at right anglesto the plane of the plate 5, one ear of each pair being formed with an eye 9, while the other ear of the pair is formed with a hook 10, in which eye 9 is loosely connected the loop end 11 of a resilient clamping pin 12 which has its opposite end detachably engaged in the hook 10 for the clamping of prescription sheets upon the plate 5 to hold the same smooth thereon.
Cut from the plate 5 are abutment wings 13 which are bent at right angles to the said plate and are disposed near the upper end thereof, and against these wings are adapted to abut the upper edges of prescription sheets 14 to preserve order thereof upon the plate 5, while spaced from the said wings 13 and cut from the plate 5 are pointed tines 15, which are bent at right angles thereto and are adapted to penetrate the prescription sheets for the securing of the same upon the plate 5. Spaced from the ears 7 and formed on the longitudinal edges of the plate 5 isan additional pair of ears 16, one of which is formed with an eye 17 for the loose connection of the loop end 18 of a resilient clamping pin 19, while the other ear is formed with a book 20 to receive the pin 19, the latter being designed to bridge the prescription sheets 14 when placed upon the plate 5 to securely clamp the same thereon near the upper edges thereof, and likewise the pin 12 is adapted to bridge the prescription sheets near the opposite or bottom edges of the same I and thereby hold the sheets smooth and inorder. upon the plate of the file.
Now should it be desired to inspect any particular prescription of the series held upon the plate 5, the necessary number of prescription sheets are turned 'over until arrival at the particular prescription sheet. The turned over sheets are engaged by the pin 12 at the upper end of the plate 5, which initially is released from thehook ear and thereafter engaged in the latter to clamp the said turned over sheets so that areading may be had of the particular prescription sheet. In this manner the prescriptions are conveniently held and can be readily in spected in their order of arrangement upon the plate 5 of the file.
- On the opposite face of. the plate 5 are tongues 21 whiclrserve as a label or card holder for receiving an index card having suitable indicia thereon indicative of the numerical arrangement of the prescription sheets upon the file or the series numbers thereof in the order of'arrangement of the same.
One of the pins 12 is preferably of waved formation and has the required resiliency for the firm clamping of the prescription sheets.
g In Fig. 4: there is shown a slight modification of the invention, whereinthe plate 22, which is constructed identically in ac.- cordance with the plate 5, is formed with an ear 23 provided with a pintle sleeve 24 in which is received the pintle terminal 25 of a. clamping pin 26, which pin is identical to the pins 12 and 19, the only difference being the manner ofhinging the pins to the plate.
, In Fig. 5 there is shown av still further modification, wherein the base plate 27, which is identical in construction to the main Copies of this patent may be obtained for or base plate 5, excepting that at one end the same is bent upwardly and slightly curved to form a front Wall 28 which has cut therefrom a finger hold 29, and by reason of this particular construction the file can be used as a slide drawer in, the o rdinary well known style of prescription cabinet, as will be clearly obvious.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of use of my improved prescription file will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended ex planation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A file of the class describedcomprising a plate, wings projecting from one face thereof and forming abutments for the edges of prescription'sheets, means on the plate for engaging such prescription sheets to hold the same in stacked relation to each other, means for clamping the prescription sheets when superimposed upon each other or when folded back, and a hanger atone end of the plate. 7
2. A file of the class described comprising, a plate,.wings projecting from one face thereof and forming. abutments for the'edges of prescription sheets, means on the plate for engaging such prescription sheets to hold the same in stacked relation to each other, means for clamping the prescription sheets when superimposed upon each other or when folded back, a hanger at one end of the plate, and a card holder on the opposite face of the plate.
In testimony whereof'I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
