F. W. HUBER INDEXING DEVICE Filed April 22, 1924 attoiwu e- Patented Feb. 2, 1926.
UNITED" STATES FREDERICK W. HUBER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
INDEXING DEVICE.
Application filed April 22, 1924. Serial No. 708,261.
' mary object the provision of a device of this character, which is simple and" inexpensive of construction and which will adapt itself to loose leaf binders of well-known forms and provide same with means at the jointor hinge or at one edge of the binder which will visually index the contents of the binder and enable the nature of said contents or name of the party whose record is kept to be clearly and instantly discernible at a glance and without the necessity of opening the covers of the binder, when such information is desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby a number of binders can be arranged in stack formation and in such manner that the index portions of the respective binders will be distinguishable from each other and prominently displayed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character which shall be strong and durable, light of weight, and of a design whereby the index indicia can be printed upon a suitable slip of paper card or the like and arranged in a transparent protective casing of the device.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important details thereof may be varied, and so it shall be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a loose leaf bind er showing an application of my invention thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of my invention initially associated with a package of loose leaves before arranging same between the back boards of the binder.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on line 44: of Figure 2.
In carrying the invention into practice, use is made of a loose leaf binder hav ing the customary back boards or cover members (11) and (12), the former having a hinged section (13) and the latter a similar section (14). Said hinged section (13) is provided with leaf-engaging posts or elements (15) adapted to be threaded or passed through the usual holes (16) in the leaves (17) and through holes (18) in the hinged section (14-). Screws or suitable retaining devices (19) are engageable with said posts and 'are adapted to be brought to bear against one side of the section (1 1) when the cover or back members are clamped against the leaves. Y
Mounted at what I call the hinge end or joint of the binder is my improved indexing device (20), the same consisting of a U- shaped leaf-receiving member (21) formed of cloth between the folds of which the adjacent ends of the leaves are mounted and snugly arranged. In other words, this member is of a size to accommodate a given number or stack of normally loose leaves so that the upper and lower folds of the member come parallel with the top and bottom leaves respectively when the member is in an applied position. It shall of course be understood that said member can be made in various sizes to accommodate itself to a given number of leaves and to leaves of re spectively varying widths or binders of different sizes. The device is preferably coextensive with the width of the leaves so that the ends of the device come flush with the side edges of the binder.
The connecting edge wall (22) between the upper and lower folds of the member (21) is reinforced by a longitudinal strip of stiffening material The member (21) is nested within a correspondingly shaped receptacle (24) of flexible transparent material and same has its flanges 25-25 cemented or otherwise suitably secured to the aforesaid upper and lower folds of the member (21), said receptacle has a connecting wall (26) open at its ends (27 and free between said ends from the edge wall (22) so that the latter and the former can be spread apart or separated relatively for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The ends of the flanges 25-25 are provided with slot holes (28) which register with corresponding holes (29) in the respective upper and lower folds of the member (21) and with the holes (16) in the loose leaves of the binder. In this manner the posts (15) when passed through all of the said holes serve to retain the device in position.
By separating the wall (26) from the wall (22) it is seen that a pocket is formed therebetween for insertion and retention therein of a slip or card (30) on which the. indexing indicia are printed or otherwise suitably arranged and that incident to the described location of the mating posts of the'device, said slip or card (30) is clearly visible from the hinge end or back of the binder. In this 'manner a number of such binders can be arranged in stack formationwith the 1ndex surfaces exposed one directly above the other as will be understood. My improved indexing device is freely separable from the binder and therefore is interchangeable and can be removed from one binder and applied to another if desired. Its construction also enables one to quickly and conveniently attach it to a binder. without the necessity of changes in the construction of the latter.
lVhile I have shown the preferred embodl ment of my invention, it shall be understood that changes in the construction of the device and obvious substitutions may be made within the scope of the hereto appended claims.
It should be observed that my indexing device does not restrict the book to a certain number of sheets, because it is always possible to place an additional series of sheets on top or below the indexing device.
I claim:
1. An indexing device comprising two U- shaped members nested together and hav ing portions defining a receptacle for an index card, one of said members formed of transparent. material to expose the indicia of said card, the parallel portions of the said members being adapted to be clamped inside the cover boards of a loose-leaf binder.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an indexing device for loose leaf binders comprising a member formed of transparent material provided with parallel flanges and a connecting wall, the respective flanges having alined openings for the reception of the leaf-engaging posts of the binder to thereby hold the device in relatively permanent position with respect to the leaves and to maintain a positionof the connecting wall against one edge of the binder so that an index card can be inserted between the connecting wall and the adjacent edges of the leaves of the binder.
FREDERICK W. HUBER.
