Be it known that I, EUGENE (lSmoY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Tifiin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in drinking fountains for poultry, and the object is to provide means for supporting a vessel or can at a sufficient elevation in a pan for causing the pan to be filled with water at a predetermined elevation at all times.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through the can and receptacle; Fig.2 is a view showing thepan partly in section and the can in the position taken as the can is inserted into the pan for fastening the'can to the pan; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pan; Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views of slight modified forms; Figs. 6 and 7 are vertical sectional views of the forms shown in Figs. 4 and 5 respectively.

A jar or can B is adapted to be supported by the pan A, and is provided with a flange 6 and-collar 7. The flange 6 is placed in the groove 4 of the wall, as indicated in Fig. 2, then the can is forced downward causing the flange 6 to pass the flaring edges 8 and beneath the ridges 3 and enter the grooves 5 beneath the ridges. The collar 7 of the can resting on the upper edge of the wall for holding the can on the pan, and the flange 6 locking the can to the pan. In this manner the can is securely locked or fastenedtothe pan by the flange 6 entering the grooves 4 and 5.. he usual Mason fruit jar can be used if desired as it is provided with a flange and collar.
The form shown in Fig. 4 is very similar to the form disclosed in Figs. 1 to 3, with the exception that the wall converges at the center forming two converging portions 9 instead of three. Two compartments, 1 1 are formed at each end of the pan A from which the animals can drink. a
In Fig. 5, the pan A'has one end thereof reduced in size forming a constriction. Upon this constricted portion 10 of the wall a groove 11 is formed, similar to the groove 4, for the reception of the flange 6 of the can or jar, and on the opposite side of the constriction a ridge 13 is formed. Above this ridge the edge of the wall flares outwardly as at 12, and beneath the ridge 13 a groove is formed, as is shown at 5 in Fig. 2, for the reception of the flange 6 after the flange is sprung beneath the ridge 13 for the reception of the flange 6 after the flange is sprung beneath the ridge 11.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a very simple means of attachment is provided, by simply having the walls of the pans provided on the inner side thereof with grooves into which theflange on the jar or' can is sprung for fastening the jar or can tothe pan, and holding the can at an elevation whereby the water in the can will be discharged'into the pan asthe contents of the pan are consumed, and keep the water in the pan at all times at a predetermined level.
