IRONIN'G-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1a, 1916.
Application filed January 29, 1916. Serial No. 75,141.
and State of New York, have invented new' and useful Improvements in Ironing- Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing boards and more particularly to an attachment therefor.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character wherein novel means are attached to the ironing board to permit of the attachment or removal of the ironing board to and from a wall bracket or the like, whereby the board will not occupy any unnecessary floor space only upon the active use of the board.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character wherein means are employed for locking the ironing board to the wall bracket and preventing any accidental movement or displacement thereof with respect to such bracket.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view showing the ironing board attached to a wall bracket for use; Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section taken through the bracket and the ironing board; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the attaching plate of the ironing board removed therefrom; and Fig. 4: is a side view of the ironing board removed from the wall bracket and in folded position.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, in which similar characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 indicates a bracket fixedly secured to a window or door casing, the latter being designated by the character A, by means of screws or the like fastening devices 6. The bracket is provided on its front face with a casing 7 formed in the front wall 8 thereof with a substantially T- shaped slot 9. Disposed transversely across the front bottom edge of the casing 7 and flush with the point of termination of the T- shaped slot 9, is a horizontally disposed ledge 10. It is my object to provide this specific type of wall bracket for the purpose of permitting of a quick attachment or detachment of the ironing board 11 thereto,
whereby the ironing board will not occupy any unnecessary floor space and may be compactly stored when the use of the same is undesired, and to this end I provide the ironing board 11 with a connecting member 12. This connecting member 12 is constructed of metal or the like material and cast into one integral piece, and is substantially U-shaped in cross section, whereby when the connecting member is fixedly secured to the ironing board 11 by means of the fasteners 13, the same will extend longitudinally over the opposite faces of the ironing board and greatly assist in prolonging the life of the board, for the reason that the said connecting member serves as a reinforcement for the board. This connecting member 12 is bent to provide a housing 14 including an upper wall 15, a lower wall 16 and a connecting wall 17. Extending outwardly from the free longitudinal edges of the respective upper and lower walls of the housing are attaching tabs 18 through which the fasteners 13 are inserted for stationarily securing the connecting member to the board. Extending at right angles and contiguous to the lower wall of the connecting member is webbing 19, provided with attaching tabs 20 for the purpose of securing the webbing upon and along the longitudinal center of the under face of the ironing board and serving to reinforce the board and prevent the breakage thereof, while formed integral with the connecting wall 17 of the housing and projecting outwardly and at right angles thereto is a T-shaped head 21, said head adapted to engage in the T- shaped slot 9 of the bracket 5 and repose upon the ledge 10 of the bracket, whereby the ironing board 11 may be readily attached or removed from the bracket 5 as the occasion may so demand. In order to prevent the accidental movement of the head 21 out of the slot 9 or having any slight movements with respect thereto, I employ a locking member 22, which is pivotally connected to the front face of the casing 7 of the bracket and adapted to swing downwardly and engage with the connecting member 12 and retain the board locked in the slot of the bracket.
When the board is in applied position the free end thereof or the outer end of the board is well supported through the medium of a hingedly connected prop 23, said prop being hingedly connected to he under face of the ironing board 11 and in ad acent relation to the free terminal of the webbing 19 and the prop is provided with a slot 24 having pivot-ally connected therein a brace 25, said brace adapted to engage behind the spring keeper 26 when the board 1s inactive use and prevent any accidental folding or collapsing of the prop during the operation of laundrying the rticles of apparel. It will, of course. be understood that when the board is detached from the bracket 5 the locking member 22 is thrown out of engagement with the connecting member 12, the head 21 removed from the slot 9 of the bracket, the brace folded within the slot 24 and the prop 23 swung outwardly and against the under surface of the board, and by such operation the board may be stored away until the use of the same is desired. Formed integral with the connecting member 12 and struck upwardly therefrom is an ironing stand 27 having a ledge 28 for preventing the slipping oi the iron not shown, off of the ironing stand as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the device together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended thereto.
I claim:
1. In combination with a support, a bracket fixedly secured thereto and provided with a casing formed with a T- shaped slot and a ledge, of an ironing board havlng a T-shaped head adapted to removably engage in the slot of the casing and repose upon the ledge thereof, and means for locking the ironing board to said bracket and upon the ledge of said bracket.
2. In combination with a support, a bracket fixedly secured thereto and provided with a casing having a front wall formed with a T-shaped slot and a ledge, of an ironing board having a T-shaped head adapted to movably engage in the slot of the casing and repose upon the ledge thereof, and means pivotally connected to the front wall of the casing at a point above its slot for locking the ironing board to said bracket and upon the ledge thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
